Puffy Scalloped Crochet or Knit Cowl

By: JoAnne Denison

This free crochet pattern will keep you cozy even in the coldest of climates.  The Puffy Scalloped Crochet or Knit Cowl stands up on its own even against chilly winds.  The best part?  If you're a knitter, you can knit the body of the scarf instead of crocheting.

  • Main Color (“MC”) I skein of Joann’s Angel Hair Yarn. Or substitute any chunky yarn rated for 6 mm needles/9mm crochet hook. (You will use smaller needles/hook for tighter stitch). 3.5 oz, 100 gr, 120 yds.
  • Use a 6.5 mm crochet hook. This will provide a tighter stitch so collar can stand up on its own and wind cannot blow thru so easily.
  • For knitting use 8.0 mm needles and 2 sets of circular needles to knit in round OR use 14" needles.

Finished Size: project 12 to 13" in diameter

Special stitch - hsc, or half single crochet. This stitch is same as an European sc. Insert hook in desired st, bring up loop, YO and draw thru 2 lps on hook.

Trim Color (“TC”)
Scraps of left over chunky. I used a limited production Walmart brand “nobo” (no boundaries) pink chunky yarn rated for 9mm needles/10mm crochet hook.

Crochet Instructions:
Ch 80 and join with sl st, being careful not to twist yarn. *Chain 2 (counts as 1st hdc), 79 hdc back loop only, join with sl st to first st*, repeat from * to * until you run out of yarn. Tie off. Approx. 11 rows. Add more if taller scarf is desired.

Knitting instructions;
Cast on 80 and knit in round alternating 3 rows knit and 3 rows purl until you run out of yarn and then cast off, one stitch over the other, leaving short tail.
Note: If you are going to use scallop trim below, this trim is done in 8 stitches per large scallop, so adjust stitches accordingly so that the total number of stitches chosen is a multiple of 8 stitches.

This trim is large and puffy, with a 3 dimensional effect because you will be crocheting over the first round.
Rnd 1. Join TC to one side of scarf with a slip st in any sp, *ch2, skip 3 hdc and hsc in next space*, repeat * to * to end and join to first sl st. Stitches should not pull, but should be loose enough to lay flat with no slack. If body was knitted, skip number of stitches which will allow for 20 sl st-ch2 stitches evenly all around.
Rnd 2. Ch 1, in same next slip stitch from Rnd 1, 3 (dc-ch1) in same stitch over next rnd 1 hsc, hsc over nxt rnd 1 hsc and ch1, creating a puffy effect. Be sure to pull up your stitches to a second row height to give a dramatic shell effect. Continue to *3(dc-ch1) in next rnd 1 hsc, hsc in next rnd 1 hsc, ch1* and repeat * to * to end. Join with sl st and fasten off.

Weave in all ends.
