Quarantine Friendly Backyard Activities

Have you noticed more screen time around the house and less family fun? No one will judge you if you’re running short on ideas to stay busy by now, but these backyard activities for families might be able to help!

Adjusting to life during the novel coronavirus pandemic has been a challenge for everyone. Our daily lives have been interrupted, and our plans have had to change around closures and cancellations of restaurants, schools, summer camps, and more.

If you’ve been looking for ways to get your family together outside, these quarantine-friendly backyard ideas are perfect for you! Your backyard is full of all ages fun potential just waiting for you to get out there and enjoy it. Explore nature, get creative, or relax in your backyard with these great ideas for family fun in the yard!

Backyard Camping

Go on a camping adventure in your own backyard! Set up a tent (or build a simple shelter with rope and a waterproof tarp!) and enjoy the great outdoors for the night! Make your campsite cozy with blankets, yoga mats, and sleeping bags. If you want to get fancy, you can even bring out an inflatable air mattress! Cook up some camp delicacies over your grill or fire pit.

For added comfort, decorate your yard with fun lights and lanterns and bring a fun game or nature activity! You could have a scavenger hunt, tell ghost stories, and sing camp songs. By the end of the night, you’ll feel at one with the great outdoors. The best part is that, if you discover sleeping outside isn’t your thing, you’re just a few steps from your cozy bed inside!

Check out these fun and easy craft projects to make your outdoor adventure fun for all!

Summer Camp at Home

If you can’t bring your kids to summer camp, try bringing summer camp to your kids! Keep them learning and playing all summer long with a DIY summer camp filled with education, physical activity (Play tag! Have races or set up an obstacle course!), and loads of other adventures!

You could teach them some of your favorite games, songs, and activities from your days as a camper way back when. Your summer camp activities could include learning a language, working on reading and writing, learning to do a pull up, and any other goals you and your family have. Build an at home summer camp schedule with your children, everyone wins!

Let these easy DIY projects be a fun and inspirational start to your at home summer camp!

Picnic Lunch Ideas

Make any day special with a picnic lunch in your yard! Picnics are a fun way to get everyone outside. Pack your favorite lunch, grab a blanket to sit on, and bring your household together for a meal and some time in the sun. For even more fun, play some outdoor games after you eat. Check out these ideas for outdoor eating and picnic games to get inspiration!

Pool Day at Home

If you’ve got a pool at home, you’ve probably already had plenty of pool days, but you don’t even need a pool for a fun, water filled day! If your family is desperate for that submerged feeling, you might want to investigate a kiddie pool. But there are other ways you can have cool, watery fun in the sun!

Set up a slip-n-slide! Have a water balloon fight! Play games! One of my favorites is Drip, Drip, Drop. It’s “Duck, Duck, Goose” with a twist! Instead of tapping players’ heads, you spill a drop of water on them, and you dump the whole cup of water when you get to “drop!”

Backyard DIY Ideas

Now that you’re spending all this time in your backyard, you might want to spruce it up a bit! Get crafty and try some fun projects that will brighten up your yard and give you something to do. Crafting is also a great way to do some repurposing of all those bottles and cans you’ve been going through in your lockdown. Check out these great backyard crafts to get started, but don’t be afraid to get creative and make your yard look just how you want it!
