Zig and Zag Crochet Striped Throw

Combine Super Tweed and Super Saver yarns to create this colorful Zig and Zag Crochet Striped Throw from Red Heart Yarn. Bright wobbly stripes are worked in two colors with a foundation. This three-color crocheted afghan would make a great stadium blanket worked in your team's colors.

Zig and Zag Crochet Striped Throw

Throw measures 45” wide x 56” long.

Materials:

  • Red Heart® “Super Tweed™” (Art. E779) 5 oz (141g), 266 yd (243m) skeins: 5 skeins 7901 Fire A
  • Red Heart® “Super Saver” (Art. E300) solid color 7 oz (198 g), 364 yd (333 m); multicolor, heather and print 5 oz (141 g), 244 yd (223 m), flecks 5 oz (141g), 260 yds (238 m) skeins: 1 skein each 321 Gold B,256 Carrot C
  • Crochet Hook: 6mm [US J-10]
  • Yarn needle

GAUGE: 14 sts = 4” and 7 rows = 4”, in pattern.
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.


Special Stitches

shell = (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated stitch or space.

Fpdc
= Front post double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook from the front side of the work to back and to front again around the post of the indicated stitch on a previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (1 loop on hook).

Bpdc
= Back post double crochet. Yarn over, insert hook from the back side of the work to front and to back again around the post of the indicated stitch on a previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (1 loop on hook).

NOTE:
To change color, work last stitch of row until 2 loops remain on hook, drop old color, yarn over with new color and complete stitch. Fasten off old color.


Instructions:

Row 1 (Right Side): With A ch 113; sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—112 sc.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 2 dc in first sc, skip next 2 sc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc (shell made), skip next 2 sc, *dc in next 2 sc, skip next 2 sc, shell in next sc, skip next 2 sc; repeat from * across to last sc, 3 dc in last sc, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, shell in ch-2 space of next shell, *skip next 2 dc, Fpdc around each of next 2 dc, shell in ch-2 space of next shell; repeat from * across, 3 dc in top of turning ch, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc, shell in ch-2 space of next shell, *skip next 2 dc, Bpdc around each of next 2 dc, shell in ch-2 space of next shell; repeat from * across, 3 dc in top of turning ch, turn.
Rows 5-10: Work Rows 3 and 4 three more times; change to B in last st of Row 10. Fasten off A.
Row 11 (Right Side): With B, repeat Row 3; change to A in last st. Fasten off B.
Row 12: With A, repeat Row 4; change to C in last st. Fasten off A.
Rows 13 and 14: With C, repeat Rows 3 and 4; change to A in last st of Row 14. Fasten off C.
Row 15: With A, repeat Row 3; change to B in last st. Fasten off A.
Row 16: With B, repeat Row 4; change to A in last st. Fasten off B.
Rows 17–26: With A, repeat Rows 3 and 4 five times; change to B in last st of Row 26. Fasten off A.
Rows 27–32: Repeat Rows 11–16.
Rows 33–64: Work Rows 17–32 two more times.
Rows 65–73: Repeat Rows 17–25.
Row 74: Ch 1, sc in first dc, skip next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, sc in next dc, hdc in next dc, *dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, slip st in next ch-2 space, sc in next dc, hdc in next dc; repeat from * across to last 3 dc, skip next 2 dc, sc in last dc—112 sts. Fasten off.

Border
Round 1 (Right Side): With Right Side facing, draw up a loop of B in end of Row 73, to work across the side edge of throw, ch 1, work 2 sc in end of each dc row across side edge (skip the ends of the sc row at beginning and end of the side edge); working across opposite side of foundation ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in first ch (corner made, sc in each ch across to last ch, (sc, ch 2, sc) in last ch for corner; work 2 sc in end of each dc row across other side edge; working across sts of last row, (sc, ch 2, sc) in first st for corner; sc in each st across to last st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in last st for corner; join with slip st in first sc—146 sc across each side of throw, 112 sc across top and bottom, and 4 ch-2 corner spaces.
Round 2 (Right Side): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 space; join with slip st in first sc—148 sc across each side, 114 sc across top and bottom, and 4 ch-2 corner spaces. Fasten off B.
