Chandelier Pendant Necklace

With some colorful paper and chandelier crystals, you can create this beautiful Chandelier Pendant Necklace from Mitzi Curi.  This handmade pendant is a great way to add some style and vintage fashion to your accessory collection.  This is also a neat way to use up paper scraps that you love too much to toss!  These elegant DIY pendants make great gifts and can often be made for less than $10.00.

Materials:

  • Chandelier crystals (look for the kind that have one side somewhat flatter than the other)
  • Mod Podge (matte or satin)
  • Paint brush
  • Ball chain or other chain
  • Pinch bails*
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Emery board

Instructions:

  1. Select your images.  I used my beloved stash of vintage wallpaper for most of my crystals.  You might want to try scrapbook paper if you don't have anything old, or pay a visit to the Graphics Fairy and print out something.   To ensure that the image you print out on your ink jet printer won't smear, you need to copy it on a laser printer.  I take my images to FedEx/Kinkos or Staples and use their laser copiers to re-copy anything I print on my ink jet printer.

  2. Lay your crystals on the wallpaper or image of your choice, trace around them with a pencil, and cut them out.

  3. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge directly to the top of the image.  The flatter side of the crystal goes on top of the glue coated paper.

  4. Press thoroughly with your fingers so the excess glue squeezes out the edges and any air bubbles are eliminated.  Excess glue can be cleaned up with a damp paper towel.

  5. Next I usually wait for it to dry, then use an emery board to sand off any overhang.   A thin coat of Mod Podge can then be spread over the back of the piece to seal it.

  6. You can pierce the paper covered hole in the crystal at any time with an awl or other sharp tool.  This allows your pinch bail to be inserted when the paper is thoroughly dry, and then the pendant can slide onto a chain.

*Pinch bales can be purchased at a jewelry supply shop.  I get mine online, usually on eBay or Etsy. You will need to order large size bails that will reach the hole in your crystals, 24mm or larger might be necessary.   If you have wire-working skills you can create your own custom jump rings to go through the hole in the crystals.

What a create use of chandelier crystals. Any idea where they can be purchased? My first thought was the big box home improvement stores as they may have "replacement" crystals or maybe the local hobby store.

OMG! Easy peasey necklaces. These are really unique but a little to "big" for me but my Grandmother would love these. These look a little bit like some of her brooches that she wears right now. I guess if I were able to locate some smaller chandelier crystals I may would consider this for myself. I would go with something a little more modern for the images.

This project will cost you time to finish, but this really looks elegant. I will definitely try to make some. I can make these for gifts or souvenirs. It will also look perfect for your summer outfit. Just make the design bright and colorful.

Wow, these are beautiful. SO dainty and pretty, and that vintage vibe that is always chic and fashionable. I didn't know it would be so easy to make these! And it would seem you'd have to have little to no experience, too, just like me. I am a crocheter, not a jewelry maker! These are truly giftable items.

These pendants look neat! Reading the instruction, it looks easy too. Ive tried to make pendant like this, using some plastic material I bought at a craft store as the topper. But the topper turns yellow after a while. The topper was indeed made for making pendant like this, and was expensive. How disappointing. But now I might try again using crystals like these. But someone here made a comment about the paper peeled off? Any tips?

Who would have known that you could use these Chandelier crystals for such a pretty necklace. I have seen ladies wearing these but never knew they were this easy to make. This tutorial is so simple and easy and very fast. A great Christmas gift and it can be done quickly and someone will wonder where you got it. Make a few a extras to keep some on hand for last minute gifts. thanks for the idea.

I followed your instructions on creating the Chandelier Pendant Necklace. I printed my artwork by laser printer, cleaned the pendant flat side where the artwork was to be mounted. I then applied a nice even coat of mod podge to the artwork and applied the crystal being sure to remove air bubbles. Once everyting dried noticed that the artwork peeled very easily away from the crystal. Did I do someting wrong?

This is brilliant! I absolutely love this idea. Thanks!!!

Thank you for sharing. I have 2 old chandler lamps, I just could not throw out. Now I know what I can use the crystals for. TYVM!!

I'd like to say.....I do something like this,'cept I use round clear glass circles(you can buy them at any Dollar store(The green back ones) I decopage the pic to the glass then I buy small wooden squares(like you find at Hobby Lobby or Micheals) I paint the wood or decopage another design, then use a Drumel drill to put a hole in one corner. So you have a backing which is a diamond shape or a square standing on 1 corner and a glass circle put on top.I decorate the wood w/h glitter glue, gemstones, etc.Put a jump ring through the hole and add thin ribbon or cord to make into a necklace.A bag of large glass circles is just $1.00 and the wooden squares a few dollars.Mine have turned out really neat!!

beautiful, but what would you use for a bail if the pendant doesn't have a hole? thanks

You could use thin jewelery wire and create a wire wrap to suspend your crystal if it doesn't have a hole.

These are really quite lovely. Thanks for sharing. Now to find the chandelier crystal!!! That might be the hard part.

I posted a comment on how I made my necklace w/h glass circles instead of a chandlier crystal.Hope this is of help :)
