Cabin in the Woods

Don’t take this project too seriously: It’s mostly meant as a relaxing exercise to improve your linework. That said, even though it’s very accessible, you’ll work on creating a stunning borderless composition using smartly placed trees.

Materials List

  • Paper of your choice

  • Compass, circle tool or round object to trace

  • Pencil and eraser

  • Black pens in three sizes: 1.5, 05 and 01

DIRECTIONS

  1. This project starts with a pencil circle you can create with your compass. Then, draw a second smaller circle inside the first. Place it wherever you want. I went toward the bottom right.

  2. Inside the smaller circle, place a small cabin in a medium (05) and a thin (01) pen. You can do that with the level of detail that looks good to you. I kept it fairly simple with a door, two windows, a chimney and some tiny shingles on the roof outline.

  3. Now comes the actual drawing exercise. With your thick (1.5) pen, draw a bunch of trees within the big circle. Make sure the lines are straight and even. Do not draw outside the pencil line of the big circle or inside the small circle.

  4. With your thin (01) pen, fill in the gaps with more trees, again remembering to stay inside the pencil lines. Make sure your inkwork is dry and you won't smudge anything before carefully erasing the pencil lines.
