I love a good recycling craft, more so one that involves naturAl materials. These days most egg trays are plastic so when I came across this I was intrigued. I bet kids could have fun moulding all types of shapes and painting them.

I am making these this week but need to know about the glue. The instructions say school glue OR tacky glue, then it says use 4 tablespoons of each. Is it both or either/or?

That's a great question! I would use both since tacky glue is a bit stronger. It'll make your bowl sturdier. Let me know how it turns out!

I realize that this is months later.. But what they probably mean is, when they say 4 tbs. of each, 4 of food coloring and 4 of glue, since the direction is on the same line.

Hi paver, I think you could make larger items with this material since it is reinforced with the glue. Reminds me of the papier mache pumpkins and Easter bunnies from the 1950's using a similar type of base. I made bells from the egg carton cups, but it was the same shape, so with this method, you could for, them into actual bell shapes! We used to,paint them, but by adding the color to the entire material it would be richer looking! Looks like fun!

I was just thinking they reminded me of paper mache from when I was a kid but we used newspaper. I have not done or thought of this in years. Have you made these eggs?

HI Weberme, haven't made these egg carton bowls, but like you have made newspaper papier-mch using a balloon as a form. This egg carton method is much sturdier and I think you could use a balloon or other bowl to,form it for a less rustic look.

Thanks, Marilyn B. I never did get it made for Easter last year, but another one is coming up soon! Unfortunately, I didn't save any egg cartons, either, but I still have time for that.I am going to try a largish one for the table. It does look like fun!

So many egg cartons have been wasted by throwing them away! ) I immediately thought about a rustic type of centerpiece for Easter it should be easy enough to decorate for that (or anything, actually). Do you think there any limit to how large one could make a bowl like this?
