Missing Key Plant Markers
Who would have thought that a random key could be so crafty? If you have a key you're no longer using, use this Missing Key Plant Markers tutorial from Amanda Formaro to create adorable plant stakes. This trash to treasure craft is great for kids and adults.
Materials:
- Recycled keys
- White indoor/outdoor spray paint
- Colorful Sharpie permanent markers
Instructions:

Spray paint the keys and allow to dry. Give them a second coat and let them dry again before turning them all over and painting the other side.

Write herb names with colorful Sharpies. Then trace over the words, offset just a little, with a black fine point Sharpie. You want to make sure the color shows through.

Use shades of green to draw leaves in different sizes on the keys. I also used pinks, oranges and reds to add a few dots here and there just for colorful accent.

I would also use it to write a cute or simple quote on the key and stick or hang on a plant for giving or for keeping.

Really clever! Just one question: how long does the writing stay visible? (I haven't had any luck with markers on perennials - they fade over the winter and I can't tell where my bulbs are going to come up.

Hi Arlene. Even with a sealer coat, I would recommend using those "fold to close" sandwich bags. Cover each key and seal with a rubber band. This should help protect them from the elements!

To Arlene, forget the sharpest and buy a paint marker in the craft section at Wal-Mart or Jo Ann's. They do not fade.
