I have been sewing for years and like any home sewer, I have collected a bucket of buttons. When needed, and to find two or three that match, always meant dumping them out, then putting them all back. My son's ten-gallon fish tank that never had a fish in it became a perfect vehicle to scatter buttons around without having to pour them out on the table. I just love it!

I keep my buttons in a tin, but have sorted 'likes' into the small plastic 'ziplock' bags for crafting/beads. Then my gks can play in the button tin without unorganizing my buttons:) Sometimes I buy special buttons just for them to play with.

For my spare button collection I went to the sporting goods department at Wal-Mart's and bought small, clear plastic, rectangular (4x3ish) tackle bait boxes. They have an upside and a downside, each of which has a latch. You can customize the compartments (to an extent) inside the boxes and sort your buttons by size, color, etc. I did the same for my necklaces. The only challenge I've found is some of the latches close very securely and can be difficult to get open when I need to. I also bought 9x13 tackle boxes and use them to store my earrings. I have four boxes so far and love not having to rummage through a jewelry box to find the pair I want to wear.

I use a large clear glass jar that has a 'bale' wire around the lid. It's so easy to see into and keeps my buttons dust free.
