Crochet Gardening Apron

Crochet a fun and functional apron for gardening with fruits and vegetables on the three pockets. This gardening apron crochet pattern from Lily Sugar n' Cream is easy to create and comfortable.

Crochet Gardening Apron


Materials:

  • Yarn: Lily® Sugar ’n Cream

(Solids: 70.9 g/2.5 oz/109 m/120 yds) (Ombres: 56.7g/2 oz/86 m/95 yds)
Main Color (MC) (00084 Sage Green) 4 balls
Contrast A (00095 Red) 1 ball
Contrast B (01628 Hot Orange) 1 ball
Contrast C (01004 Soft Ecru) 2 balls

  • Crochet Hook: Sizes 4 mm (U.S. G or6) and 5 mm (US. H or 8) crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Small quantity of black yarn for embroidery

Size: Approx 22½ x 23 ins [57 x 58.5 cm].

Gauge: 13 sc and 14 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger hook.

Instructions:

 

Note: To change color, work to last 2 loops on hook at end of row. With new color, draw through 2 loops on hook, then proceed.

STRAWBERRY
With A and smaller hook, ch 5.
1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 2 ch. 3 sc in last ch. Working into opposite side of ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 3 (counts as dc). 3 dc in first sc. 1 dc in next sc. 1 hdc in next sc. 1 sc in next sc. 3 sc in next sc (point). 1 sc in next sc. 1 hdc in next sc. 1 dc in next sc. 4 dc in last sc. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 1. 3 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 7 sts. 3 sc in point sc. 1 sc in each of next 7 sts. 3 sc in top of last ch 3. Place marker. Work 6 sc evenly along top edge to first sc. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Stem End: 1st row: With RS facing, join MC with sl st to sc beside marker. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp. (Work long sc around 2rd row. Miss next st. 1 sc in next sc) twice.1 sc in next sc. Turn.
2nd row: Miss first sc. Sl st in each of next 3 sts. Ch 5. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Sl st in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off.
With Black yarn, embroider ‘seeds’ with straight sts.

CARROT (make 2)
With B and smaller hook, ch 6.
1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 4 ch. 5 sc. Turn.
Working in back loop only of each sc throughout, proceed as follows:
2nd to 10th rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
11th row: Ch 1. Sc2tog over first 2 sc. 1 sc in next sc. Sc2tog over last 2 sc. 3 sc. Turn.
12th to 14th rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st to end of row. Turn.
15th row: Ch 1. Sc3tog. Turn.
Edging rnd: Ch 1. 3 sc in last st made (tip). Work sc evenly around outer edge of Carrot working 3 sc in each top corner. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Top: Mark center 5 sc at top of Carrot.
1st row: With RS facing, join MC with sl st to first marked sc. Ch 1. 1 sc in same st. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 5. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Sl st in first sc. Sl st in each of next 2 sc. Ch 8. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Sl st in same sc as where ch originated. Sl st in each of next 2 ch. Ch 5. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Sl st in same sc as where ch originated.
Fasten off.

APRON
With MC and larger hook, ch 74.
1st row: (RS). 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 1 hdc). 1 hdc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 72 hdc.
2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as st). 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until work from beg measures 15 ins [38 cm], ending with a WS row.
Next row: Ch 2. (Yoh and draw up a loop in next st) twice. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook - Hdc2tog made over next 2 sts.
1 hdc in each st to last 3 sts. Hdc2tog over next 2 sts. 1 hdc in last st. Place markers at each end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until 28 sts rem.
Cont even until work from beg measures 22 ins [56 cm]. Fasten off.

POCKET
With C and larger hook, ch 74.
1st row: (RS). 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 1 hdc). 1 hdc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 72 hdc.
2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as st). 1 hdc in each hdc to end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until work from beg measures 7½ ins [19 cm], ending with a WS row. Fasten off. Vertical Dividers: Place vertical markers along 25th hdc in from each side edge. With RS facing, join 2 strands of MC with sl st at foundation edge of marker and work a vertical chain up length of Pocket to top edge. Fasten off. Rep along other marker.
Bottom edging: 1st row: With RS facing, join C with sl st in bottom corner of lower edge. Ch 1. Work 72 sc evenly across. Fasten off.
2nd row: With RS facing, join MC with sl st in first sc of last row. Ch 1. Work 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off.
Top edging: Work as for Bottom edging across top edge.
Sew Carrots and Strawberry to Pocket as shown in picture.
Pin Pocket in position to RS of Apron having bottom edge of Pocket 3 ins [7.5 cm] above lower edge of Apron.
Apron Edging: 1st rnd: With RS facing and larger hook, join MC with sl st to bottom right corner of Apron. Ch 1. 3 sc in same sp as sl st. Work 71 sc along bottom edge, 3 sc in corner, 49 sc up side edge (working through both Apron and Pocket edges), 23 sc up armhole edge, 3 sc in corner, 27 sc across top edge, 3 sc in corner, 23 sc down armhole edge, 49 sc down side edge (working through both Apron and Pocket edges). Join C with sl st in first sc.
2nd rnd: With C, ch 1. 3 sc in same sp as last sl st. Work 1 sc in each sc around, having 3 sc in each corner sc. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Neck Strap
With C and larger hook, ch 63.
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. sc 62.
2nd and 3rd rows: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn. Fasten off at end of 3rd row.
Waist Ties (make 2).
With C and larger hook, ch 101.
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of ch. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Sew Pocket vertical dividers through both thicknesses to form 3 pockets.
Sew on Neck Strap and Waist Ties.
