Repurposed Patriotic Luminaries

Before you host a backyard barbeque, make a few Repurposed Patriotic Luminaries from Tiffany Windsor out of empty tin cans. This is sure to become one of your favorite 4th of July crafts. Decorations can be expensive but this one is perfect for frugal crafters.

Repurposed Patriotic Luminaries

  • Aleene’s Turbo Tacky Glue
  • Aleene’s Magnetic Tacky Tape
  • Tulip Fashion Glitter
  • Crop-A-Dile hole puncher
  • Smooth edge can opener – this is the type that leaves no sharp edge on can or lid
  • Tin cans
  • Cool2Cast shapes
  • Magnets (strong hold)
  • 16 gauge armature wire
  • Wire cutters

  1. Remove top lid from can with can opener.

This is a very nice cost effective project and always great to upcycle and reuse or repurpose items! As an alternative you could just paint the outside, or use the glitter for trim stripes, or perhaps glue on some plastic stars of different colors or the ones that glow in the dark for some extra sparkle. It would be pretty to hang these luminaries from tree branches in bunches, and of course, to be safe, use the battery type votives or tea lights, or even battery operated string LED lights inside for an even brighter glow!

A cute idea for the kids or scout groups/youth groups. I like the glitter but not very fond of the foam shapes used to decorate it. I would just leave the holes punched in there and keep it simple. Sometimes overdoing on the decoration can take away from the simple beauty of something. Tin cans are cool, though!
