Patriotic Star Pinwheel

By: Sheila of Cheeky Magpie

Create a star pinwheel with patriotic paper for a fun 4th of July craft project. Stick into your garden or planter for outdoor decoration this holiday. This project comes to us from Sheila of Cheeky Magpie.

Star Pinwheel

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive
  • 2 buttons
  • 3" thin wire
  • Large plastic bead
  • Stick
  • Tape
  • Ribbon (optional)
  • Shape for decoration (optional)
  • Brad (optional)
  • Pinwheel Template

Step 1:

Cut your star following the template. Made sure you leave the dashed lines uncut. These will become the blades of the star. Punch or cut a small hole in the center of the star. Place adhesive around the center hole. Loop the blades into the center and stick down.

Star Pinwheel Step 1

Step 2:

Poke hole in middle of paper circle and use adhesive to apply it to center of star. This helps to hold all of the blades in place.

Star Pinwheel Step 2

Step 3:

Thread wire through button and then place on top of hole in center of the star. The wire will be what allows the star to spin.

Star Pinwheel Step 3

Step 4:

On the back of the star, thread the bead on the wire and then add the second button. The bead keeps a space between the stick and the star allowing it to move freely. Twist wire to keep button/bead in place. Then wrap wire around the stick and tape down ends.

Star Pinwheel Step 4

At this point, you are done but may want to decorate with ribbon or trim and a shape for the center of the star. I used a small chipboard star for mine. It's not only a toy, but doubles as decor. Mine is being stored in a planter next to some flowers. I spins gently with the breeze. Very nice!

Love this patriotic pinwheel! Certainly use caution with little ones, but you could also make these stationary for display only. There are so many decorating options for this, from painting the papers used, embellishing the printed designs, and adding some glitter here and there. You might even try some metallic glittered washi tape on the edges. So fun!

I must comment on Pinky52's question about the safety of the wire in this project. I feel the wire is the least of the worries--the buttons, the beads and most of all the stick are all dangerous for small children. If you plan to make this for a small child, let them use it only under supervision and by no means let them run with it.

It sounds like fun, and I'm sure it would work. But, is that wire safe around small children. I would be afraid to let them play with it. Can you find a safer way to attach the pinwheel to the stick?

This sounds like an easy and fun project. The photos are very helpful. I like that I have most of the materials already. This would make a nice little gift, too. Thank you. :)
