"These are miniature Christmas stockings made from 4 ply yarns. Each stocking takes about a half an hour or less to make. I even use fun fur as the top trim and ribbon for the bows. For each color yarn I use a make three or four different sizes from really tiny about 1 1/2 inches up 4 inches. I make larger ones to use as treat gift bags too. The ornaments make the tree look so festive!"

This was a Top Ten Ornament in the Best Ornament Contest 2016! Check out the top ten winners here, and be sure to check out all of the amazing ornament tutorial entries.

Materials List

  • 4 Ply Yarn
  • Fun Fur for stocking trim
  • Depending what size stocking you want the size of hook matters. I use F, G, and H. Makes sm, med, and lrg stockings.

  1. R1..Ch 4, dc in 4th st from hook 9 times, join with sl st in top of the ch 4. (10 dc

  2. R2..2 sc in each st around, join with sl st in 1st sc. (20 sc)

  3. R3..(1 sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) repeat 4 more times, join with sl st in 1st sc. (25 sc)

  4. R4-R6..Sc in each st around. (25 sc)

  5. R7-R11..11 sc in next 11 st, ch 1 turn.

  6. R12..4 sc in next 4 st, 3 sc together, 4 sc. Join to the sc on the other side. This leaves the back of the heel row open.

  7. R13..16 sc evenly around.  You are now making the top part of the stocking.

  8. R14..Ch 3 (this is your 1st dc) in joining sc st from previous row, dc in each st around, join in top of ch 3. (16 dc)

  9. R15-R19..Sc in each st around. Fasten off. (16 sc)

  10. R20-R24..Contrasting color yarn, join with sl st in back part of stocking and sc in each st around.

  11. Fasten off. (16 sc) This is the cuff that you fold down.

  12. You need to sew the back of the heel together. I only use the back of each loop and whip stitch to join.

  13. Weave a ribbon or yarn through the dc row and tie in a bow. Attach a ribbon or yarn to the back of stocking for hanging on tree.

I made one last night and my grand daughter took it for her little tree. I down sized my tree this year to a slim tree and some of my ornaments were too big. They hung against it not in or on it. These are just the right size to put on it.

These are so cute but I have not crochet in years. I am going to try to make some and see if I can remember how to do these stitches. I may have to find some how to again. These stocking ornaments would be a cute addition to any tree and great to add one for each child or grand child. I may have to make some throughout the year and put on tree next year. Anyone make any?
