  • Note: 1 ball of each color will make approx 6 Snowmen
  • Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Instructions

Notes: Head and body of snowman are worked in one piece.

Do not join at end of rnds. Work in continuous rnds (spirals). PM for beg of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.

SNOWMAN (make 3) Beg at top of head with A, ch 2.

Head

  1. 1st rnd: (RS). 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 6 sc.

  2. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 12 sc.

  3. Rnd 3: (1 sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc) 6 times. 18 sc.

  4. 4th to 8th rnds: 1 sc in each sc around.

  5. 9th rnd: Sc2tog. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. (Sc2tog) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. (Sc2tog) twice. 12 sc.

  6. 10th rnd: 1 sc in each st around.

Body

  1. 11th rnd: 2 sc in next sc. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. 2 sc in each of next 3 sc. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. 2 sc in next 2 sc. 18 sc.

  2. 12th rnd: 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. 1 sc in each of next 6 sc. 2 sc in each of next 3 sc. 1 sc in each of next 6 sc. 2 sc in next sc. 24 sc.

  3. 13th to 21st rnds: 1 sc in each sc around. Stu snowman and continue stu ng as work progresses.

  4. 22nd rnd: 1 sc in next sc. (Sc2tog) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 6 sc. (Sc2tog) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. 18 sts.

  5. 23rd rnd: (Sc2tog) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. (Sc2tog) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. 12 sts.

  6. 24th rnd: (Sc2tog) 6 times. 6 sts. Fasten off, leaving a long end. Flatten last rnd and sew opening closed. Using photograph as a guide, use back stitch to create arms and legs, sewing all the way through body from front to back and then from back to front again and pulling fairly tightly.

HAT (make 3 – 1 each with C, D, and E) Ch 6.

Ribbing

  1. 1st row: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of chain. 5 sc. Turn.

  2. Next 21 rows: Ch 1. Working in back loops only, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Do not turn at end of last row.

Top of Hat

  1. 23rd row: Ch 1. Working along side edge of ribbing, 1 sc in end of each row. Turn. 22 sc.

  2. 24th row: Ch 1. (1 sc in next sc. Sc2tog) 7 times. 1 sc in next sc. Turn. 15 sts.

  3. 25th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st to end of row. Turn.

  4. 26th row: Ch 1. (1 sc in each of next 2 sc. Sc2tog) 3 times. 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Turn. 12 sts.

  5. 27th row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st to end of row. Turn.

  6. 28th row: Ch 1. (1 sc in next sc. Sc2tog) 4 times. Turn. 8 sts.

  7. 29th row: Ch 1. (Sc2tog) 4 times. 4 sts.

  8. Fasten off, leaving a long end. Thread end through st of last row and pull to gather st tog. Fold piece in half and sew edges tog for back seam. Roll up brim and sew hat to top of snowman’s head.

Top Tail

  1. With hat color yarn, ch 7.

  2. 1st row: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of chain. 6 sl sts.

  3. Fasten off. Use yarn ends to tie top tail to hat.

Pompom

  1. With A, ch 2.

  2. 1st rnd: (RS). 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 6 sc. Do not join. Work in continuous rds (spirals). PM for beg of rnd. Move marker up as each rnd is completed.

  3. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Working in back loops only, 1 sc in each sc around.

  4. Fasten off, leaving a long end. Thread end through sts of last rnd and pull to gather sts tog. Sew pompom to end of top hat.

SCARF (make 3 – 1 each with C, D and E) Ch 30.

  1. 1st row: 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch to end of chain.

  2. Fasten off.

  3. Tie scarf around snowman’s neck and tack in place.

FINISHING

  1. Facial Features: Use photograph as a guide.

  2. Eyes and Buttons: With F, embroider French Knot eyes and buttons.

  3. Nose: With B, embroider a Bullion st for nose, wrapping yarn around needle 5 times.

  4. Cheeks: With red crayon, color cheeks.
