Mimic the look of the mistake rib knitting stitching pattern by combining stitches of different heights and working in the back loop with this free crochet hat pattern. When crocheted with wool, the Faux Mistake Rib Easy Crochet Hat can accommodate a range of free hat pattern sizes. This warm and wonderful hat pattern makes a charming cap and will do its best to fight off the cold this winter. You could easily create this crocheted hat pattern in a variety of colors. The thick, cute, and universal look makes it an easy hat pattern to make for the whole family. If you wanted to spice this hat up a bit, you could add a crocheted flower to the brim or even sew on a patch from your favorite sports team.

Easy

Crochet Hook: H/8 or 5 mm hook

Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials List
  • Molly Girl Yarn Chart Topper (100% superwash Merino wool, 3.5 oz/100 g, 220 yd/201 m) 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2) skeins in Chart Topper, or equivalent amount in any medium weight wool yarn. (I recently learned that Molly Girl discontinued the Chart Topper yarn. Her Rock Star yarn would be a great substitute.)
  • US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn needle.
Crochet Gauge

20 sts x 17 rows in pattern = 4 (10 cm) in pattern, pinned flat but unblocked. For best fit, always check your gauge.

Finished Size: Newborn (3-12 month old, 1-2 year old, 3-5 year old, 6-10 year old, Teen/Adult small, Adult medium, Adult large). See notes for measurements.

Like the beginning comment said, I too have been looking for a crochet pattern that mimics the ribbing of knitting. My mother loves that look and although she likes whatever I crochet she would still like to that that ribbed look that you get from knitting. I am definitely going to give this pattern a try.

I like the look of this Faux Mistake Rib Easy Crochet Hat! The back loop only crochet makes for a nice even ribbing. It is great to have the pattern with all different sizes in one pattern, taking the guest work out of trying to make different sizes. I will be trying different types of yarn to see which one will be best. Some of the wool yarns can be to itchy and some to soft with to much stretch in it.. so I'm not sure what to really use? Thank you so much for sharing this free crochet pattern.

This hat looks really easy and fun to do. I think this hat will work nicely for me to use for my hat tree that I do every year to donate to our local food pantry to give out to people as they come in to get food each week. This helps me use up some yarn that I have been collecting all year, and it gets used for a good purpose.

This patter was life savior this winter as my boys aare very picky when it comes to hats.My family is really picky but this hat patter was just perfect! Of course I had to adjust the length according to the request but the results were totally pleasing.I made 5 hats for my boys and my husband, using red heart . I will use this pattern for next year as well .No more pattern searching for me.Thank you for sharing it.

I keep trying to crochet a hat from the bottom up like this and it always ends up being wonky at the top. I've had a lot more luck with starting at the top with a magic circle and working my way down. I'm going to try one more time, because I really want a hat like this!

there is no pattern!
