What Turkey? Thanksgiving Apron

You can paint this whimsical turkey apron for your budding chef by using this free apron pattern. Add a little humor to your Thanksgiving prep--the painted turkey peeks out of the apron pocket, which is sure to make your little one giggle with delight. This Thanksgiving projects for kids is a great way to keep them occupied while you're still setting up the house. It will also encourage them to help you in the kitchen and get excited about cooking.

 

Materials:

  • DecoArt Americana DAS10 Fabric Painting Medium
  • DecoArt Americana Acrylics
    • DAO1 - Snow (Titanium) White
    • DAO10 - Cadmium Yellow (transparent)
    • DAO67 - Lamp (Ebony) Black
    • DA163 - Honey Brown
  • Child-sized apron, natural
  • Iron-on transfer pen
  • Tracing paper
  • Permanent black marking pen
  • #12 and #6 flat brushes
  • #0 liner brush
  • Iron
  • Water container
  • Paper towels
  • Wiggle eyes (2)
  • Low-temp hot glue gun
  • Pressing cloth or brown paper bag
  • Pattern

Instructions:

  1. Trace patterns onto tracing paper. Flip design face down. Use iron-on transfer pen to trace over reverse side of designs. Position design on apron ink-side down. Press over design with iron. Lift corner of paper to check for design transfer. Remove paper.
     
  2. Mix paint colors with Fabric Painting Medium 2:1 on palette.
     
  3. Use #12 flat brush and Lamp Black to paint feathers.
     
  4. Use #6 flat brush and Snow White to paint feather tips.
     
  5. Use #12 flat brush and Honey Brown to paint head and wings.
     
  6. Use #6 flat brush and Cadmium Yellow to paint beak. Let dry.
     
  7. Use liner brush and Honey Brown to paint line work on feathers.
     
  8. Use marking pen to letter and outline.
     
  9. Let dry 24-48 hours.
     
  10. To heat set: Place pressing cloth or brown paper bag over painted design. Set iron on temperature appropriate for fabric type. Press design for 30 seconds with iron. Follow label instructions for laundering information.
     
  11. Position and adhere wiggle eyes on face.
