Turn a flea-market shelving unit, discount-store baskets and found seashells into a fashionable piece with gel stain and a coat of paint.

Ocean Basket Shelf Unit

*DecoArt Products Required:

  • Designer Series: DAD01 - White
  • Americana Gel Stains: DS29 - Walnut
  • Americana Spray Sealers: DAS13 - Americana Matte Spray
  • 7 small square baskets (Picked up at discount store.)
  • 7 seashells (Picked up at beach while on vacation.)
  • 1 1/2" flat brush
  • Water container
  • Palette or plastic plate
  • Paper towels
  • Medium and fine grit sandpaper
  • Drill with 1/8" bit
  • 1/8" turquoise satin ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Upholstery tacks (7)
  • Wood CD stand

Allow to dry between steps.

1. Basecoat CD stand White. Let dry.

2. Use medium grit paper to sand back all edges on shelves and sides. Sand sides and top surface randomly to create worn look.

3. Smooth out any rough areas with fine sandpaper.

4. Use slightly dampened paper towel or soft cloth to rub Walnut Gel Stain over sanded edges and worn areas on sides and top. Let dry.

5. Apply Americana Matte Spray Sealer. Let dry between coats.

6. Push upholstery tack inside top band of each basket.

7. Use drill to make hole in base of each shell.

8. Thread ribbon through hole in shell forming loop and tie bow with ribbon ends. Hang shell from basket tack. Place baskets in stand as desired.

Helpful Hints

1. If CD stand has been previously painted, you may want to sand and prime it before repainting.

2. Band on baskets was green. I changed them by repainting with Americana Acrylics DAO86 Uniform Blue.
