This cute free crochet pattern is perfect for your next crochet project.  Make the Crochet Butterfly Square for an adorable decoration, or use it as part of your next afghan.


Size:
 9" square

Materials:
 

  • Worsted weight yarn in two colors.  The butterfly looks better in Variegated yarn, and a small amount of black or brown for body.
  • Size G hook And a yarn needle


Instructions:

Foundation Round:
With butterfly color Ch 4,work 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. sl st to join. ch 3

First Wing:
Row 1: (in back loops for this row) Dc in same st as ch 3, 1 dc, 1 hdc in nextst, 1 hdc 1 dc in next st. 2 dc in next st. Ch3 turn.(8)
Row 2: Dc in same st as ch 3, dc in next, dc,sc in next. Sc, Dc in next. 2 dc in next. 1 dc in next, 2 dc in next, dc in turning ch.  Ch 3 turn (12)
Row 3:  Dc in same st as turning ch, dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next, dc in each of next 2 dc. Dc, sc in next , Sc dc in next.  dc in next 3. dc in ch 3. ch 3 turn (16)
Row 4:  Dc in same st as turning ch. Dc in next 3 sts.2 dc in next st. Dc in next sc in each of next 2 sts. Dc in next st. 2 dc in next. Dc in next 4 sts. 2 dc in next st. dc in next st and in turning ch. (20)
Row 5:  Ch 6. sl st into same st as ch 6. *ch 3, skip next st, sc in next st* repeat from * to* across.

Second Wing: Sl st into 3rd st from starting ch of first wing on foundation. Ch 3, repeat rows 1 thru 5 working in front loops.

Square Shaping:
Rnd 1:  Join with a sl st in any of the unused loops on Butterfly ring. Dc in same st as ch 3. 2 dc in each st around. join ch 3.  DO NOT TURN ON THESE RNDS (24 dc)
Rnd 2:  Dc in same st as ch 3 * dc in next st, 2 dc in next st * repeat from* to * around. Join ch 4 (38 dc)
Rnd 3:  Dc in same st as ch *Dc in 8 dc. dc ch 1dc in next st* repeat around. join in 3rd ch of ch 4. ch 3. You now have 4 corners with dc ch 1 dc. (44)
Rnd 4:  2dc, ch2,2dc in ch 1 space. * Dc in next 2 dc, hdc in 2 dc, sc in 2 dc, hdc in 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc. 2 dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch space.* repeat from * to * until you have 3 corners. Dc in next 2, Hdc in next 2, sc in next 2, Hdc in next 2. dc in last dc. Join ch 3.
Rnd 5-7: *Dc in each st to corner. 2 dc, ch2, 2 dc in ch2 space(corner)* Repeat around. Join ch3. at end of rnd 7 only ch 1.
Rnd 8:  Sc around with 3 sc in ch 2 spaces. Join tie off weave in ends.

Butterfly Body
Leaving a 6" tail ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook. sc in next 9 chs. tie off leaving a 6" tail. The tails are the butterflys anteni. If you melt the ends they will form balls and will not fray in the washer. Sew body between wings.
