Egg Cup Pincushion

The talented Christina Lane of The Sometimes Crafter shares this free sewing pattern for creating an adorable egg cup pincushion. These are perfect for Easter, but fun anytime you want a little color in your surroundings. Use fabric scraps left over from a project to create several.
Materials:
- Egg cup
- Fabric scrap (approx. 5” square)
- Polyfill
- Needle Thread
- Glue gun glue
Directions:
1. Draw a 4” circle on the back of your fabric scrap. I used the bottom of a small dish to trace around. Cut out around the circle, approx. ¼” from your drawn line.
2. Baste stitch around your drawn line, leaving long tails at the start and finish.
3. Pull your long ends on one side (I pulled on the back side of the fabric) to gather into a pouch.
4. Stuff the pouch with Polyfill, keeping thread pulled tight.
5. Knot your threads, keeping the opening on the pouch as small as possible. Stuff with a little more Polyfill if you need to. The firmer you stuff it, the more rounded your cushion.
6. With your needle and thread stitch the opening all the way closed. I worked from one side to the opposite for a few stitches, and then did the opposite direction a few times.
You should now have a closed cushion as shown.
7. Take a nice sized wad of Polyfill and roll it around in your hands to mat it together a little. Stuff inside your egg cup. You want it to fill the cup about ¾ of the way when compressed slightly.
8. Run a line of hot glue around the top edge of your egg cup
9. Press your stuffed cushion inside of the egg cup and hold for a few seconds, allowing for the glue to dry.
That’s it! You’re done. You now have an egg cup pincushion. Now go make some more!

Oh my. I love this pincushion. It really has some serious cuteness. I have got to make some of these for my sewing desk and I am going to make one for the teachers desk. Such a great idea. I know just the place to find these cup. I have seen them at the thrift store and the fabric you can use some scraps laying. I like the idea of putting some lace as someone said around where the fabric is glued. Super easy project.

As well as being a good basic pattern it is a good shape for extra decoration. I always fill the tops of the pincushions with bran, I find the pins go in easier and stay sharper.

A little addition to make them prettier, hot glue a row of lace or pretty braid around the top edge where the cup joins the material. I made a very similar project using a small clay pot, painted with flesh-tone and a tiny, simple face painted on the front. Glued yarn "hair" around the top flat rim of the pot and a ribbon between the hair and fabric pin cushion. Made a cute little fabric yo-yo (contrasting fabric) with a button in center and sewed or glued it on. Finished project looks like a cute little girl with a hat on.

Thank you for this terrific idea! I had purchased 2 gorgeous egg cups, only to find that they were too big for even extra-large eggs. Now I can turn them into pin cushions and give them as gifts to my sewing friends.

This is a cute pin cushion. The only change I will make in the morning when I make this will to put a circle of cardboard between the batting and the material covered ball of batting. This will prevent needles from going down into the batting, making it hard to reterive. Cups are available at most $1.00 stores, goodwill type stores.

i use steel wool instead of fibre fill it keeps my pins sharp rust free

I found egg cups like these at crate and barrel online they werent very expensive at all.

a pretty cup from a thrift shop would work too... just follow the directions for the egg cup, actually you may find egg cups in thrift stores also, I have seen many here in Pa.
