Instructions

Fabric Requirements

Large Star Fabric – ½ yard
Inner Star Fabric – ¼ yard
Outer Star Fabric – ¾ yard
Surrounding Star Fabric – 1¼ yards
Background Fabric – 2½ yards
Binding – ½ yard
Backing – 4 yards

Cutting Instructions

For the large star fabric, cut:
(8) 5" x 5" squares
(8) 4½" x 4½" squares

For the inner star fabric, cut:
(4) 5" x 5" squares

For the outer star fabric, cut:
(24) 5" x 5" squares

For the surrounding star fabric, cut:
(60) 5" x 5" squares

For the background fabric, cut:
(60) 8½" x 8½" squares
(60) 5" x 5" squares
(60) 4½" x 4½" squares

For the binding fabric, cut:
(60) 2½" strips

Star Block Instructions

  1. On the back of four 5" x 5" background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner as shown below. Measuring a quarter inch from the drawn line, draw the sewing lines on each side.

  2. Place a 5" x 5" background square on a 5" x 5" inner star square, right sides together, and sew on the outer lines as shown below. Cut apart on the center line. Trim to 4½" x 4½". Repeat for the remaining marked background squares. Makes 8 Half Square Triangles.

  3. On the back of eight 5" x 5" background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner as shown below. Measuring a quarter inch from the drawn line, draw the sewing lines on each side.

  4. Place a 5" x 5" background square on a 5" x 5" large star square, right sides together, and sew on the outer lines as shown below. Cut apart on the center line. Trim to 4½" x 4½". Repeat for the remaining marked background squares. Makes 16 Half Square Triangles.

  5. On the back of twenty-four 5" x 5" background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to cor¬ner as shown below. Measuring a quarter inch from the drawn line, draw the sewing lines on each side.

  6. Place a 5" x 5" background square on a 5" x 5" outer star square, right sides together, and sew on the outer lines as shown below. Cut apart on the center line. Trim to 4½" x 4½". Repeat for the remaining marked background squares. Makes 48 Half Square Triangles.

  7. Using the diagram below, assemble the Star block.

Surrounding Star Block Instructions

  1. On the back of fifty 5" x 5" background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner as shown below. Measuring a quarter inch from the drawn line, draw the sewing lines on each side. 

  2. Place a 5" x 5" background square on a 5" x 5" surrounding Star square, right sides together, and sew on the outer lines as shown below. Cut apart on the center line. Trim to 4½" x 4½". Repeat for the remaining marked background squares. Makes 100 Half Square Triangles.

  3. Using the diagram below, assemble four Surrounding Star blocks. 

Corner Surrounding Star Block Instructions

  1. On the back of fifteen 5" x 5" background squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner as shown below. Measuring a quarter inch from the drawn line, draw the sewing lines on each side. 

  2. Place a 5" x 5" background square on a 5" x 5" surrounding Star square, right sides together, and sew on the outer lines as shown below. Cut apart on the center line. Trim to 4½" x 4½". Repeat for the remaining marked background squares. Makes 30 Half Square Triangles.

  3. Using the diagram below, assemble four Corner Surrounding Star blocks.
