Materials:

  • 1 skein Tanis Fiber Arts Yellow Label DK [100% superwash merino wool; 260 yards/238 meters per 4 ounce/115 gram skein] in Charcoal (A)
  • 1 skein Tanis Fiber Arts Yellow Label DK [100% superwash merino wool; 260 yards/238 meters per 4 ounce/115 gram skein] in Buttercup (B)
  • 1 skein Tanis Fiber Arts Yellow Label DK [100% superwash merino wool; 260 yards/238 meters per 4 ounce/115 gram skein] in Sweetheart (C)

Gauge:  22 sts and 29 rows = 4 inches in St st and Fair Isle pattern with larger size needles

 

Finished Sizes:

Hat
Small (toddler) – 18-19 inches
Medium (child) – 20-21 inches
Large (youth) – 21-22 inches

Cowl
Small (toddler) - 2 [3T, 4T]
Medium (child) - 5 [6, 7, 8]
Large (youth) - 10[12, 14]

Scarf
Small (toddler) – 4 inches x 46 inches
Medium (child) – 6 inches x 51 inches
Large (youth) – 6 inches x 58 inches or 6 inches by any preferred length

Instructions:
Cowl, hat, and scarf are all worked in the round.
Fair Isle chart is worked across a multiple of 16 sts.
2x2 rib =*k2, p2*, repeat** to the end of the round.
Skp = slip one stitch as if to knit, knit the following stitch, then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted one.
Pfkb = purl into the front of the stitch, then knit into the back of the same stitch, slip the stitch from the left needle.

Hat

  1. Using your preferred method (for example, long tail cast on), color A and smaller sized needles, cast on 84 [92, 100] sts.
     
  2. Place marker and join for knitting in the round. Be careful not to twist the stitches.
     
  3. Work in 2x2 rib for 1 inch.
     
  4. Change to larger size needles and knit one round, evenly increasing 12 [20, 28] sts evenly spaced around: 96 [112, 128] sts.
     
  5. Change to Color B and knit for 2 [2, 3] rnds.
     
  6. Change to Color C and knit for 2 [2, 3] rnds.
     
  7. Change to Color D and start working on ‘Hugs and Kisses’ Fair Isle chart using Colors D, A, and E.
     
  8. Once chart is complete, change to Color C and knit one round evenly decreasing by 8 sts as follows:  * K10 [12, 14], k2tog; repeat from * around: 88 [104, 120] sts.
     
  9. Knit with Color C for 1 [1, 2] more rnds.
     
  10. Change to Color B and knit one round evenly decreasing by 8 [8, 10] sts as follows:  * K9 [11, 10], k2tog; repeat from * around: 80 [96, 110] sts.
     
  11. Knit with Color C for 1 [1, 2] more rnds.
     
  12. Change to Color A.

 

Sizes [Medium, Large] Only

  1. Knit one round decreasing by [6, 10] sts as follows:  * K[14, 9] k2tog; repeat from * around: [90, 100] sts.

 

Crown Shaping

  1. Rnd 1: * Skp, k6, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round: 64 [72, 80] sts.
     
  2. Rnds 2-4: Knit around.
     
  3. Rnd 5: * Skp, k4, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round: 48 [54, 60] sts.
     
  4. Rnds 6 and 7: Knit around.
     
  5. Change to color E.
     
  6. Rnd 8: * Skp, k2, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round: 32 [36, 40] sts.
     
  7. Rnds 9 and 10: Knit around.
     
  8. Rnd 11: * Skp, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round: 16 [18, 20] sts.
     
  9. Rnd 12: Knit around.
     
  10. Rnd 13: K2tog around: 8 [9, 10] sts.
     
  11. Rnd 14: *k2tog*, repeat ** to the end of the round.
     
  12. Cut yarn; thread tapestry needle with end and weave end through remaining sts, gathering tightly to close.

 

Scarf

  1. Using your preferred method (for example, long tail cast on), Color A and smaller needles, cast on 48 [64, 64] sts.
     
  2. Place marker and join for knitting in the round. Be careful not to twist the stitches.
     
  3. Work in 2x2 rib for 1½ inches.
     
  4. Knit one rnd.
     
  5. Change to larger size needles and Color B and knit 3 rnds.
     
  6. Change to Color C and knit 3 rnds.
     
  7. Change to Color D and knit one rnd.
     
  8. Start working ‘Hugs and Kisses’ Fair Isle chart using Colors D, A, and E.
     
  9. Once chart is complete, work one rnd in color D.
     
  10. Change to color C and knit 3 rnds.
     
  11. Change to color B and knit for 3 rnds.

 

Stripes

  1. Change to Color A and knit 8 rnds.
     
  2. Change to Color E and knit 8 rnds.
     
  3. Change to Color F and knit 8 rnds.
     
  4. Repeat last 16 rnds, 1 [2, 2] times
     
  5. Change to Color C and knit 8 rnds.
     
  6. Change to Color F and knit 8 rnds.
     
  7. Change to Color C and knit 8 rnds.
     
  8. Change to Color B and knit 8 rnds.
     
  9. Repeat last 16 rnds, 1 [2, 2] times
     
  10. Change to Color C and knit 8 rnds.
     
  11. Change to Color D and knit 8 rnds.

 

Size Large Only

  1. Repeat last 16 rows, 2 more times.

 

All Sizes

  1. Change to Color C and knit 8 rnds.
     
  2. Change to Color B and knit 8 rnds.
     
  3. Repeat last 16 rnds, 1 [2, 2] times
     
  4. Change to Color C and knit 8 rnds.
     
  5. Change to Color F and knit 8 rnds.
     
  6. Repeat last 16 rnds one time.
     
  7. Change to Color E and knit 8 rnds.
     
  8. Change to Color F and knit 8 rnds.

 

Size Small Only

  1. Repeat Color E stripe.

 

Sizes Medium and Large Only

  1. Repeat Color E and F stripes once, then repeat Color E stripe once more.

 

All Sizes

  1. Change to Color A and knit 8 rnds.
     
  2. Change to Color B and knit 3 rnds.
     
  3. Change to Color C and knit for 3 rnds.
     
  4. Change to Color D and knit one rnd.
     
  5. Start working ‘Hugs and Kisses’ Fair Isle chart using Colors D, A, and E.
     
  6. Once chart is complete, work one more rnd in color D.
     
  7. Change to Color C and knit 3 rnds.
     
  8. Change to Color B and knit 3 rnds.
     
  9. Change to Color A and knit one rnd.
     
  10. Change to smaller needles.
     
  11. Work in 2x2 rib for 1½ inches.
     
  12. Bind off all sts in pattern.

 

Cowl

  1. Using your preferred method (for example, long tail cast on), Color A and smaller needles, cast on 80 [96, 112] sts.
     
  2. Place marker and join for knitting in the round. Be careful not to twist the stitches.
     
  3. Work in 2x2 rib for 1 inch.

 

Sizes Small and Medium Only

  1. Change to Color D and start working ‘Hugs and Kisses’ Fair Isle chart using Colors D, A, and C. On Rnd 13 of chart, change to larger size needles.

 

Size Large Only

  1. Change to Color B and knit 3 rnds.
     
  2. Change to Color F and knit 3 rnds.
     
  3. Change to Color D and knit one rnd.
     
  4. Start working ‘Hugs and Kisses’ Fair Isle chart using Colors D, A, and C. On Rnd 13 of chart, change to larger size needles.
     
  5. Once chart is complete, knit one rnd with Color D.
     
  6. Change to Color F and knit 3 rnds.
     
  7. Change to Color B and knit 3 rnds.

 

All Sizes

  1. Change to Color A and knit one rnd, placing markers as follows:  K14 [18, 21], pm, knit 10 [12, 14], pm, k 32 [36, 42], pm, k 10 [12, 14], pm, k14 [18, 21].

 

Raglan Shaping

  1. Rnd 1: (Knit to one st before marker, kfb, slip marker, kfb) 4 times, knit to the end of rnd: 88 [104, 120] sts.
     
  2. Rnd 2: Knit around.

 

Sizes Small [Medium] Only

  1. Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 once, then repeat Rnd 1 once more: 104 [120] sts.

 

Size Large Only

  1. Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 twice, then repeat Rnd 1 once more: 144 sts.

 

All Sizes

  1. Change to Color C, and knit one rnd.
     
  2. Begin working in seed stitch and continue with raglan increases as follows: 
     
  3. Rnd 1: * (K1, p1) to one st before the marker, kfb, slip marker, kfb; repeat from * 3 times more, (k1, p1) to the end of rnd: 112 [128, 152] sts.
     
  4. Rnd 2: Purl the knit sts and knit the purl sts around.
     
  5. Rnd 3: * (K1, p1) to one st before the marker, pfkb, slip marker, pfkb; repeat from * 3 times more, (k1, p1) to the end of rnd: 120 [136, 160] sts.
     
  6. Rnd 4: Purl the knit sts and knit the purl sts around.
     
  7. Repeat Rnds 1-4 once: 136 [152, 176] sts.

 

Size Large Only

  1. Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 once more: 184 sts.

 

All Sizes

  1. Bind off all sts in pattern.
