"Don't throw away that pretty soda can, it is easy to cut into pieces and make into a heart shaped mosaic with this step by step tutorial. Your supply list includes some wire snippers, scissors, hot glue, hammer, and some escutcheon pins. If you don't have a wood plaque, you can find them by the dozens at Goodwill. Simply paint the plaque in your colors and decorate with paint pens or some pretty washi tape. Makes a cool Mother's Day Gift."

Materials List

  • wood plaque either used or new from a craft store
  • soda can
  • scissors
  • wire cutter
  • hot glue
  • scrap paper
  • brass escutcheon pins
  • hammer
  • awl

Instructions

  1. Rinse can and let dry. Then make a cut on the can rim with the wire cutters and cut a seam down the can with scissors.

  2. cut the can into 1" strips

  3. cut the strips into 1" pieces

  4. cut out a paper heart and make grid lines on it with a 1" rule

  5. put a dab of hot glue on each piece and cover the heart

  6. turn the heart over and cut away the excess so you have the original heart shape

  7. put a dab of hot glue on the back of the heart and place it on your painted plaque

  8. Punch a hole in EACH corner of the 1" pieces.

  9. Place an escutcheon pin in each hole and tap lightly into place

What a unique idea. It doesn't take much in the way of materials, is very easy to put together and it's very cute too. I read the directions and they are well written and very understandable and easy to follow. I think anyone should be able to do it. Thank you.
