Bring the Beach Home with You

Going to the beach is a fun and sandy time. Now you can bring it home with you with this project from Etchworld Armour. Create this jar full of goodies such as sea shells, jewels, beads, sea glass and more. It makes for a great decoration and memory.

Materials:

  • #20-0466 Rub N Etch Stencil –Beach Designs
  • #15-0150 Armour Etch Cream
  • Clear or opalescent glass glitter
  • Interesting shaped jar with a lid that the “Stroll on the beach” stencil will fit nicely on (ours is a gourmet jelly jar).
  • Tiny beachy things-we used: tiny shells, stones, aquarium crushed glass, wine cork unevenly cut in half, miniature wood sign, natural wood beads, jewelry pearls and jute string or whatever you like(or other things you could use-miniatures from the craft store like- sea gulls, starfish, fish, sea life, lighthouse, a buoy, life preserver, piece of fishing net, pieces of a mini boat, toy coins, etc… Other natural finds from the beach you could use-driftwood, pieces of bone, glass fragments and grass & reeds)
  • All purpose adhesive that will glue different types of surfaces together. (we like Glass, Metal & More by Beacon Adhesives-available at most craft stores)
  • Green acrylic brush-on or spray paint
  • Sand
  • Fine tip black marker& running water
  • Sponge or craft brush
  • Paint brush
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Wash & dry plaque prior to applying stencils.

  2. Cut out and rub down the “Stroll on the Beach” stencil according to package directions and remove the mylar cover sheet. Mask off all exposed areas of glass surrounding stencil with masking tape, overlapping edges.

  3. Apply Etch Cream according to package directions

  4. Rinse off cream under warm running water. Continue until cream, stencils and all masking tape are removed. Dry jar.

  5. Fill inside of jar with a little sand or crushed aquarium glass and drop in some beach finds and/or miniatures. Put lid on.

To Decorate Lid:

  1. Paint lid of jar, set aside to let dry.

  2. Cut wine cork in half with one half taller than the other. Wrap a little jute around each half. Take a knife and make a rectangular hole in the top of the taller wine cork. Write “Lifeguard on duty” on the wood sign. Dab a small amount of glue on bottom of the sign’s stake and insert in the hole. Glue the 2 pieces of cork close together on one side of lid and let dry.

  3. String 2 beads on some jute, tying a knot on either side of each. Glue ends to lid so beads drape down side of jar.

  4. Mix sand with a small amount of glass glitter. You want the sand to sparkle, but don’t use so much that the sand doesn’t look like sand anymore.

  5. Cover lid with a generous layer of glue. Arrange stones, shells and trinkets on lid as desired, pressing them down into the glue. Liberally sprinkle sand with glitter all over exposed glue areas. Let dry and shake off excess sand. After glue is dry, reapply a little glue where needed and sand or glitter till it looks the way you want.
