Beginning Crochet: Part 2
After you have a good knot tied in your yarn, you can begin to make a chain. This fundamental stitch is called a foundation stitch or chain stitch. You’ll have to experiment with how to hold the thread, so that it ran run freely while you are crocheting and still be slightly taut. Try threading it through the fingers of your left hand.
Chain stitch or foundation stitch (abbreviation ch)- The chain stitch forms the base row of any project. You should have a not-too-tight loop left by your initial slipknot. Simply yarn over (if you forgot how, bring the yarn around the hook, so it’s between you and your crochet hook, turn the end of the hook to catch the thread). Pull the thread through the loop. Continue to “yo,” yarn over and pull through. You want to practice this stitch until you can get uniform stitches before moving on. Crochet Ring (r#, the number of chain stitches made into a ring)- Chain the amount of stitches that the pattern calls for. Slip the hook through the first stitch, yarn over, and pull through both loops. These rings are used for decoration and as starting blocks for certain projects.
Crochet actually refers to picking up loop(s) from a previous stitch, which we have not actually done yet! The chain stitches form a starting chain, which the different crochets can build from.

I wish I had this website with the video to show how to crochet when I taught myself how to crochet over 30 years ago. This is so awsome, it's showing me how to do it the right way, not the way I've been doing it. At least my projects turned out pretty. Thanks
