Black and White- Although this classic combination may not seem Christmas festive, you can add small color touches for an elegant look. For example, stamp a white Christmas tree onto a black piece of card, and add small multi-colored sequins for ornaments. Black and white borders and/or simple black ribbon are stylish, rather than cute. Use metallics on black or white for sophisticated Christmas cards.

Cut-outs and Plastic- Of course, cutting out shapes from the cardstock and gluing colored paper behind the shape is an obvious choice, but you can go one step further! Use a clear plastic sheet as a base. Cut out a piece in the same size as your card and fold it to fit. Cut up shapes from the front of the cardstock card, and use adhesive to apply other shapes back onto the adhesive. Or, use plain stickers. You can always paint over them. Glue the plastic and the card together. The shapes will look to be floating. You can add a tiny bit of spray glitter too. You can also use a colored piece inside the card for an additional dose of color.

Weaving- Use heavy card stock paper in three or more complementary Christmas colors. Cut your card to size in your preferred background color or take a ready card. Leaving a 1 inch border all the way around, make a series of slits across the paper in equal increments or about ½ inch apart. You can draw a grid with pencil first before using a craft knife to make the slits. Cut out ½ inch wide strips of paper or smaller in the other colors. Use smaller strips for more delicate weaves. Weave the strips (the weft) in and out of the slit paper (the warp). Alternate how you weave with the different colors. You can also use ribbon for the warp. Glue in place at the back. You can then decorate over or around the weave.
