Birdseed Ornaments

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. To make these beautiful ornaments for the outdoors, I mixed together 1 cup flour, 2/3 cup water, 4  T corn syrup and 5 cups of birdseed then pressed it between waxed paper and put cookie cutter in it.  I pushed pieces of straws through them to create holes.  When it was hard, 6 hours later, I took them apart.

  2. I dyed twine in Rit Dye to create colorful non-toxic decorative ways to hang the ornaments in the tree.  I used the jar method for the dyeing and drying.

  3. It worked great to tie through the holes and add colorful elements to the ornaments.  I really love the way they look in the woods.

I love these bird seed tree decorations. I have made ball versions of these before but never thought about adapting them in to shapes for the different seasons I feel like a whole new world has just been open up to me!! I love the birds in the garden, and this will be a great way to keep them there!

This is a Great idea, but I would ditch the RIT dye and use food coloring instead or just leave the jute twine natural. Birds, during any season of the year, will pick at the jute and the RIT dye could be TOXIC to their small bodies.

These are GREAT!! What a great craft idea to do with the kids/grandkids over the holidays.
