I can't find any Paton's yarn in Allure or Ruby. Is that the YARN name or the COLOR name? It would be helpful to say what SIZE the yarn is, so that other types of yarn could be substituted.

Hi HisGrace4Me--Thanks for your comment. Paton Allure refers to the yarn name...Ruby is the color. So you'd be looking for Paton Allure Yarn in Ruby. Hope that helps!

why can't directions just include US size needles and eliminate the mm sizes which we do not use here in the US. The use of mm size needles creates much confusion as attested to in the above comments.

In order to achieve the size of this shawl as it appears in the photo, you need to make sure that you are using needles & yarn that successfully produce the same Tension/Guage stated in the pattern: 9 stitches and 13 rows of garter stitch pattern= 4" x4". So the finished shawl with 139 stitches wide and 163 rows will be 60-61" wide and 39" long.

I just finished this shawl and it is not as big as the one pictured. It's quite small. I used 10 1/2 needles US and followed the directions to a T. There must be something wrong with the directions. It just fits over my shoulders but does not wrap around like the picture. I made this for my daughter in law and now there is now way I can give it to her

If you use size 10 1/2 needles that is the correct size the 6 1/2 mm is the england size.

Did you use 6 1/2 mm needles or SIZE 6 1/2 needles? The pattern calls for 6 1/2 mm needles which are a size US 10 1/2. There is a big difference in the two and a size 6 1/2 would account for the size difference in your finished shawl.

so i'm new to knitting but this seemed pretty and easy. it took me weeks to do and it turned out fitting my toddler. i know i used size 6 1/2 needles so i don't know where i went wrong.
