Assembly: Join large squares together 2 high and 6 across, then join short sides together to form a circle, flatten into a square for purse of 6 squares wide and 2 squares high, sew a seam across the bottom. Join small squares together 1 high and 12 across, then join short sides together to form a circle, adjust small squares to fit on top of large squares (2 small squares per large square) sew small squares to large. Fasten of and weave in all loose ends with a needle. Flatten and square off purse and felt bag separate with straps as below.
Felting
Put the purse and straps into a pillowcase/mesh bag, tie the top, put this, 3 tennis balls or heavy clothing in the washer with ¼ the normal amount of soap (do not use softener and do not spin, it will stop the felting process). Use small load setting, hot water on regular cycle (usually 15 minutes for wash and first rinse), set a timer, turn off immediately after first rinse/spin, remove the pillow case before a full rinse/spin. Flatten and stretch the bag and straps out on a large towel. If you need to shrink them more, repeat the process. It takes me 2 cycles of felting. When felted to the size you like, squeeze most of the water out by reshaping and laying flat on a large work area between 2 clean towels, press down to absorb excess water. Let sit overnight, reshape if necessary. After 2 days of drying, punch in the side-top of the bag and press in so it holds a small fold on each side (this is where the straps will be attached). sew the straps to the inside of this fold. Lining can be added but not necessary.
