"Sam I Yam wasn’t your ordinary yam. While the other veggies in the pantry dreamed of becoming casseroles or pies, Sam had bigger plans. He wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving, not be Thanksgiving. So early that morning, he rolled himself right out of the vegetable bowl and bounced across the kitchen floor. With a determined plop-plop-plop, he made his way to the dining room, where the table was already set with shiny silverware, cinnamon candles, and a mountain of fluffy rolls. Sam peeked over the edge and gasped. “Whoa… so this is Thanksgiving!” He waddled toward the centerpiece—a big basket overflowing with pumpkins and leaves. Nestled inside was a lonely little cranberry who looked like she might burst into tears. “You okay?” Sam asked, giving her a friendly nudge. “I’m Clara Cranberry,” she sniffled. “Everyone keeps talking about the turkey and the pies. No one ever gets excited about one tiny cranberry.” Sam puffed up proudly. “Well, no one gets excited about one tiny yam either! But you know what? Thanksgiving isn’t about being the biggest star. It’s about bringing what you bring.” “What do you bring?” Clara asked. Sam thought for a moment. “I bring… enthusiasm! And optimism! And… occasional rolling.” Clara giggled. Just then, the family walked in, ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the beautiful table. A little girl spotted Sam and Clara sitting proudly in the centerpiece. “Mama, look! The cutest yam ever!” Sam felt his cheeks warm. Clara glowed like a ruby. The little girl scooped them both up. “Can we keep them here every year?” And so Sam I Yam didn’t become casserole. Clara didn’t become sauce. Instead, they became part of the tradition—the tiny heroes of the Thanksgiving table. Every year after that, Sam reminded everyone: “Anyone can be important on Thanksgiving… as long as they show up with heart.” And Clara always added, “And maybe a little sauce.”"
