DIY Holiday Snowflake Decorations

Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook

Materials:

  • 5mm (H) hook
  • White Double Knit (8 ply) yarn
  • Stitch marker
  • Wool needle
  • A willow wreath if you are making the wreath
  • If you are making a wreath you need either a willow or polystyrene wreath. 

Abbreviations:

 

  • At the end of each round just carry on, do not join with a slip stitch.  
  • Mark the start of each round and then move marker as a round is completed.
  • HK – hook CH – chain SS – Slip Stitch
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • HDC Inc – Half double crochet Increase.  Increase by placing 2 hdc in 1 stitch.
  • HDC Dec – Half double crochet decrease.  Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, yarn over hook, through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through.  Yarn over hook and pull through all the loops.  
  • DC – Double crochet
  • DC Inc - Double crochet Increase. Increase by placing 2 dc in 1 stitch
  • DC Dec – Double crochet decrease. Yarn over hook, through 1st stitch, yarn over hook through, yarn over hook through 2 loops, hook through next stitch, yarn over hook pull through.  Yarn over hook and pull through 1st 2 loops, yarn over hook and through all the hoops left.

Gauge:

  • 7 sts & 6 rows = 2”

Instructions:

Snowflake

 

  1. 5mm (H) hook & white yarn
     
  2. Ch 2
     
  3. Round 1) 6 hdc in 2nd ch from hk, ss to join to 1st hdc (6)
     
  4. Round 2) Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc) 1 hdc in same st, 5 hdc inc, ss to top of ch 2 to join (12)
     
  5. Round 3) Ch 3, miss next st, 1 ss, *Ch 3, miss next st, 1 ss* x 5 around, miss last st, & ss to last st
     
  6. Round 4) 1 ss into 1st ch 3 space, ch 4, ss into same space, ch 6 ss into same space, ch 4, ss into same space *ss into next ch 3 space, ch 4, ss into same space, ch
    6 ss into same space, ch 4, ss into same space* repeat around, (ch 6, ss into last ss – this is optional as not needed for wreath or garland etc),  finish (6 sets + loop)

 

Garland/bunting

  1. 5mm (6) hook & white yarn
     
  2. You can make the garland to any length you like and add as many or as few of the decorations you want. My Garland measured approximately 60” (152 cm)
     
  3. Ch 301
     
  4. Row 1)  1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk, 298 hdc across, finish
     
  5. Attach the snowflakes at regular intervals.

 

Wreath

  1. Attach 3 snowflakes to a willow wreath
     
  2. The other option is to use the decorations as they are and decorate round your house.
     
  3. You can also add them to presents instead of a bow
