An Autumn Tote

Get ready for the fall season with Bernat Harvest Colors. With this free crochet bag pattern from Bernat Yarns you can make a tote perfect for autumn. Bamboo straight handles are used for the perfect addition to this bag.

MEASUREMENTS: Approx 15 x 12 ins [38 x 30.5 cm].

MATERIALS

Bernat® Super Value Harvest Colors (197 g / 7 oz)
OR Bernat® Worsted Harvest Colors (400 g / 14 oz) 1 ball: (Redwood Heather).
Size 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
Purchased Bamboo straight handles 12 ins [30.5 cm] long.

GAUGE: 14 hdc and 9 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].

STITCH GLOSSARY
Dcbp = Yoh and draw up a loop around post of next st at back of work 1 row below inserting hook from right to left. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice.
Dcfp = Yoh and draw up a loop around post of next st at front of work 1 row below inserting hook from right to left. (Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice.

INSTRUCTIONS
FRONT and BACK (make alike).
Ch 67.
Foundation row: (WS). 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 2 hdc). 1 hdc in each ch to end of ch. Turn. 66 hdc.
1st row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc). 1 hdc in next hdc. *1 dcfp in each of next 2 sts. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. Rep from * to end of row. Turn.
2nd row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc). 1 hdc in next hdc. *1 dcbp in each of next 2 sts. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. Rep from * to end of row. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 11 ins [28 cm], ending with a WS row.
Next row: (Eyelet row). Ch 2 (counts as hdc). 1 hdc in next hdc. *1 dcfp in each of next 2 sts. Ch 2. Miss next 2 hdc. Rep from * to last 4 sts. 1 dcfp in each of next 2 sts. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. Turn.
Next row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc). 1 hdc in next hdc. *1 dcbp in each of next 2 sts. 2 hdc in next ch-2 sp. Rep from * to last 4 sts. 1 dcbp in each of next 2 sts. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. Turn.
Next row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc). 1 hdc in next hdc. *1 dcfp in each of next 2 sts. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc. Rep from * to end of row. Turn.
Next row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc). 1 hdc in each st to end of row. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Place markers along side edges of Front and Back pieces, 2 ins [5 cm] down from last row. With WS tog, sew sides and bottom between markers.

Straps (make 2). Push straight handles through Eyelets. Cut 66 strands of yarn 35 ins [89 cm] long. Divide into 3 groups 22 strands in each group. Braid 3 groups, leaving both ends 4 ins [10 cm] unworked.

With RS of work facing, fold ends of Strap under straight handles to WS. Bring halves of ends tog and taking 2 strands of yarn tog, wrap 1¼ ins [3 cm] of Handle as close to straight handle as possible (see photo). Fasten ends securely. Rep for other end of Strap.

I have to make this bag! Love that it looks as though it could have been knitted and the bamboo adds a fabulous dimension to the look. So unusual. Thanks for all the comments. I agree with the others who have said they have (or would) line it. I line all my knitted or crocheted bags, could be wrong but I feel it makes them last longer.

I can make this bag for less money than buying one in a boutique or a department store. It requires just one skein of yarn and the set of handles. Personally, I would line the bag. Unfortunately, that is where I am clueless! I wish someone would please explain how to do this.

Lining a bag is pretty easy (usually). Choose the fabric you want for your liner and cut pieces that are slightly larger (to allow for hemming and seams) than the shape of each wall of the bag. Sew them into the shape required and then sew it into place inside of the bag, or sew the fabric pieces directly onto each piece of the bag (on the inside of course). There are free tutorials on Craftsy for lining a tote bag and lining a crochet bag that could help you with this.

I just finished this bag and it was very quick to work up and awesome! My husband stained dowels for me to use and it was perfect. I also lined it. It's a great fall bag.

I havent made this tote yet, but, am going to start it today. I read everyones comments... maybe i can help a little. DCBP is double crochet in Back of Post... DCFP means double crochet in Front of post. and of course HDC is half double crochet. I am sure you all got these abbreviations already, but, just in case a new person had a problem Hope i could help a little. I plan on using dowels myself for the handles, I live in a rural area and we dont have access to a lot of crafting supplies...Excited about this tote... it looks sturdy and spacey.

I have read this pattern but like the person above who needs enlightenment on the terminology.. I am a very experienced crocheter and believe me the explanation for dcpt or bt or whatever it is is totally mindboggling. I'm sure there are some out there who have the patience for that but I'm not one of them. The twists and turns don't interest me. It isn't that the stitch itself is difficult, but the explanation for the "inexperienced who need help", it is not a good explanation. It would scare me off. I has scared me off!

I just finished the crochet work on this bag but, can't find bamboo handles. I am thinking of trying to use wooden dowls. I also don't understand how to attach the braided handles. I did look at the picture but, it is hard to see how it is done. Is there a better place to see it or a better explaination on how to attach the handles? I really like how the crocket pattern worked out. Now to just get it finish. Hope to hear back on this. Thanks! Meg

It looks like a beautiful bag but, as a beginner, this seems really intimidating with all the abbreviations. And this is supposed to be "Easy"? My problem is, I'm confused on the terms in the "Stitch Glossary". Maybe someone can clarify what the abbreviations "Dcbp" and "Dcfp" stand for. Also, I've seen quite a few patterns that use English crochet terms; so I have to ask, are these American or English crochet terms? Lastly, the previous poster mentioned finding "...a tutorial online and that should help with the problems doing the stitch." What kind of stitch tutorial should we be looking for? As an aside to FaveCrafts editors, I'd love to see a glossary of crochet and knit stitch terms on your web site; or at least a link in each pattern to a glossary.

I like the pattern and can read it as well. If someone has trouble with it, they should find a tutorial online and that should help with the problems doing the stitch. If one wants to print it off, and has a way to make it back-to-back on your paper, that would be the way to do it. Otherwise, go to a library where your copies are 10 cents apiece rather than as high as 25 cents a page, or do the printing at home. If you must print it, put the instructions into an Adobe file and it will be easier to not only print, but you can enlarge it as well.

Hi if you go on Utube crochet dcfb or dcbp. Utube shows you I wouldn't be without Utube wonderful site for learning .I have finished my bad and now adding a crochet pearl brooch tear drop pearls .and adding tag small flap in the middle have to find the handles now, also notsure of the braid handles I feel they are too short but will play still with them but love the bag and I have lined it adding an inside pocket for mobile or GPS. cheers Fazzie

If you copy and paste into Word 2010, and don't need to have too many lines interspersed with spaces, you should only have 1-1/2 pages. However if you like to be able to see it better, you might want to make the FONT larger, and that might help as well, and still give you less than 3 pages.

Love the texture created by the front and back post dc stitches. Could make this even longer for a neat book bag. Color is gorgeous...would look great with jeans/chambray/ khaki and white/ or black.
