How to Design a DIY Quilt

Instructions for Creating a Quilt Pattern

  1. Start by creating basic quilt block shapes (i.e. squares, half-square triangles).

  2. Begin to sketch out your quilt pattern.

  3. Color in your different areas to determine where the different fabrics are going to be.

  4. Determine your cutting size for the fabric of your quilt. The cutting size is determined by the finished size of each block.

  5. For your corner pieces add 1/2 an inch to each of your corner blocks.
For your center square, cut an extra 1/4 inch on each side.
For half-square triangles, add 1 inch to the overall size. This way each of your pieces will turn out the correct size.
For your borders put on your side borders first and then your top and bottom borders.

  6. Determine where your seam lines are going to be. Outline each square of your quilt so you know exactly what each piece will be.

  7. Label your entire sketch so you know all the different sizes you will need.

WOW. What a great video for anyone wanting to design their own quilts. Carolina Moore shows you some great patterns and explains very well on how to accomplish making your own pattern. What a great way to customize your own design for that special someone as a gift and imagine how they will feel receiving a quilt made just for them.Add some pretty ribbons every few places to give it an added touch. Thanks for the video and directions.
