This Peppermint Candy Afghan from Roseanna Beck is great for new babies.  Made with a simple granny square motif pattern, this quick baby blanket crochet pattern is easy to customize.  The pastel colors of this blanket make it perfect for a little girl or boy.

Peppermint Candy Afghan

Materials:

  • 1 skein Petal Pink Red Heart Super Saver 4-ply yarn   (A)
  • 1 skein Light Blue Red Heart Super Saver 4-ply yarn  (B)
  • 1 skein Pale Green Red Heart Super Saver 4-ply yarn  (C)
  • 1 skein Maize Red Heart Classic 4-ply yarn  (D)
  • 2 skeins White Red Heart Super Saver 4-ply yarn   
  • H and I crochet hooks or size needed for gauge
  • Yarn Needle
  • Diagram


GAUGE:  Motif measures 5 ¾” x 6 ½”
STITCH GUIDE:  Chain (ch), Single Crochet (sc), Double Crochet (dc), Slip Stitch (sl st)
SIZE:  40” x 46”

 

Instructions:

MOTIFS   (make   21 ABA,  14 BAB,  12 CDC, 12  DCD )

  1. Rnd 1:  With A and H hook ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to beg sc.
     
  2. Rnd 2:  Ch 3, dc in same sp, *ch 2, 2 dc in next sc, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 3 and fasten off.
     
  3. Rnd 3:  Join B with a sl st in any ch 2 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, *ch 1, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 sp, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.
     
  4. Rnd 4:  With A (sc, ch 3, sc) in any ch 2 sp, *ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch 2 sp, rep from * around, join to beg sc and fasten off.
     
  5. Rnd 5:  With I hook and white  sl st in any corner ch 2 sp, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp,  *ch 3 sc in sc, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch 3 corner sp, rep from * around, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.


JOINING

  1. With white whipstitch motifs together as shown on color placement diagram.
     

EDGING

  1. With I hook and white starting at upper right corner join with a sl st in sc, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc)   in same sp, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 3 sp, ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc, *sc in next dc, ch 3, (sc, ch 3, sc) in joining, ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch 3 sp, ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc, rep from * around as established, join to top of beg ch 2 and fasten off.

Why is this called "Peppermint"? When I see peppermint I always think red and white stripes - like the candy cane??
