Rainbow Ruffles Skirt

Your little girl will love twirling around in this adorable Rainbow Ruffles Skirt. Knitted in round, this fun skirt uses only knit and purl stitches. This knitting tutorial will also show you how to knit the colorful ruffles that trim the hem of this skirt.



Materials:

  • White yarn: KnitPicks Bare (Fingering weight
    462yards/100 g), 1 skein
  • Multicolor yarn: KnitPicks Felici, Rainbow
    (Fingering weight, 218 yards/50 g), 1 skein
  •  2 circular needles, 24 inches, 3.25 mm (US3)

Size:
*Instructions are written for size 3 years (3T) with 4T and 5T in brackets []. If only one number is given it applies to all sizes.
3 years (3T), waist diameter 46 cm (18 inch)
4 years (4T), waist diameter 49 cm (19â…Ÿâ‚„ inch )
5 years (5T) , waist diameter 52 cm (20â…Ÿâ‚‚ inch)

Instructions:

First Ruffle:

  1. With striped yarn cast‐on 294 [309, 324] stitches on a circular needle. Join the ends, continue working in round.
     
  2. Rnd 1: Purl
     
  3. Rnd 2: Knit
     
  4. Rnd 3: *k2tog, yo*, repeat from *to*
     
  5. Rnds 4‐12: Knit
     
  6. Rnd 13: *k2tog, k3tog*, repeat from*to* 58 [61, 64] times, k2tog, k2tog. You should have 118 [124, 130] stitches on your needle.
     
  7. Cut the striped yarn, join the white one. Continue working with white yarn.
     
  8. Rnds 14‐27: Knit.
     
  9. Set the first ruffle aside. Do not cut the white yarn

Second Ruffle:

  1. With striped yarn cast‐on 294 [309, 324] stitches onto another circular needle. Join the ends, continue working in round.
     
  2. Rnd 1: Purl
     
  3. Rnd 2: Knit
     
  4. Rnd 3: *k2tog, yo*, repeat from *to*
     
  5. Rnds 4‐12: Knit
     
  6. Rnd 13: *k2tog, k3tog*, repeat from*to* 58 [61, 64] times, k2tog, k2tog. You should have 118 [124, 130] stitches on your needle.

Joining Ruffles:

  1. Rnd 28: Connect the second ruffle to the first one as follows.
     
  2. Hold both needles together making sure that the second ruffle is on outside of the first one.
     
  3. With white yarn that you did not cut from the first ruffle knit together 1 stitch from the second needle and 1 stitch from the first needle. 
     
  4. Continue to the end of the round. At this point the second ruffle should be connected to the rest of the skirt and you have 118 [124, 130] stitches on one of your needles.
     
  5. The second one should be free and can be put aside.

Body:

  1. Continue knitting with white yarn for additional 34 [36, 42] rounds


Waist band:

  1. Continue with the striped yarn.
     
  2. Rnds 1‐4: Knit
     
  3. Rnd 5: K56 [59, 62], k2tog, yo, k2, yo, k2tog, K56 [59, 62]
     
  4. Rnd 6‐8: Knit
     
  5. Rnd 9: Purl
     
  6. Rnds 10‐17: Knit

Finishing:

  1. Fold the waist band at the purled row. Sew it to the back of the skirt.
     
  2. Make an I‐cord 100 [105, 110] cm ( 39 [41, 43] inches).
     
  3. Pull it through the two holes on the waist band.
     
  4. Weave in the ends.
