Knit Pigtail Hat

Make your adorable little girl even cuter with this free knitting pattern from Bernat Yarns. Let her show off her pigtails through this knit hat. It's great for winter and she'll love to open it as a gift.

SIZES
To fit child sizes 2/4 (6/8).

MATERIALS

  • Bernat® Jr. Jacquards (100 g / 3.5 oz)
  • 1 ball for each size: #05116 (Denim Daze).

Size 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Pair of size 4 mm (U.S. 6) double-pointed knitting needles for I-cord.

GAUGE
21 sts and 34 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in Seed St Pat.

 

Steps:
Cast on 95 (107) sts.
Work 5 rows in garter st (knit every row), noting first row is WS.
1st row: *K1. P1. Rep from * to last st. K1.
Rep last row of Seed St Pat for 5 (5½) ins [12.5 (14) cm], ending with a WS row.

Shape flap: Keeping cont of pat, cast off 25 (29) sts beg next 2 rows. 45 (49) sts. Dec 1 st each end of 4th and every following alt row 12 times. 19 (23) sts. Dec 1 st each end of every row to 5 sts. Cast off in Pat.

I-Cord: With pair of double-pointed needles, cast on 5 sts.
1st row: Knit. Slide sts to opposite end of needle. Rep last row for 13 ins [33 cm]. Cast off.

FINISHING
Try on hat to mark position for flap. Sew edges of flap in position. Make a bow with I-cord and attach to flap as shown in picture.
