Bostonian Hat and Scarf

By: Authentic Knitting Board

With the help of a knitting board, knit a matching hat and scarf worthy of Boston winters, from Authentic Knitting Board.

The change of stitch pattern adds design in same color. Hat is shaped with accent color change and knit in 2 pieces.
Stitches: Stockinette and Open Braid

Size: Finished Size of Scarf=8” X 62”.

Materials:

  • Yarn- Brown Sheep lambs pride Worsted Main color Rust=4 skeins, accent ½ skein
  • Knitting board with 38 double needles (28” or 18”)
  • Knit hook
  • Crochet hook
  • Large sewing needle

Instructions:

Scarf:

  1. Cast On 24 Sts in Rust Yarn. Place anchor yarn
  2. Knit in Open Braid Stitch for 8 rows.
  3. Note: Open Braid Stitch-Start on needle #1 top board and weave to needle #4 on lower. Weave
  4. every other needle. Turn board around, weaving back, cover end needles and those skipped.
  5. The end needles will be consecutive. Hook over all needles.
  6. Change to Stockinette Stitch.
  7. Knit 16 rows.
  8. Repeat the sequence of 8 rows of Open Braid and 16 rows of Stockinette.
  9. End scarf after the 9th section of Open Braid stitch. Your scarf is about 60”- 70” long.
  10. Bind Off. Remove anchor yarn.

Rusty Hat with accent Stripe: (knit 2 pieces for front and back)

  1. Cast On (38) stitches. Place anchor yarn.
  2. Knit (11) rows in Stockinette stitch. You are starting at Brim of Hat.
  3. Decrease row for shaping: Dec (1) stitch at beginning and end of both boards.
  4. You will make another (2) decreases in center of hat front.
  5. Place loops #15 on #16 and loops #30 on #31. This will create (2) empty needles on each board.
  6. Needles, first, #16, #31, last, will all have 2 loops on each (both boards).
  7. Carefully, shift all stitches towards center, filling in the empty needles created by decreasing.
  8. You will now have weaving on (34) needles on each board.
  9. Weave all (34) sts in stockinette. Hook over all. At decreased st, be sure to lift both bottom loops over top to complete the decreases.
  10. Knit these (34) stitches in Stockinette for additional (10) rows.
  11. Tan Accent Stripe: Tie in the Tan yarn at beginning of new row. Do not cut the main color. Lay the tails of yarn on knitting between boards.
  12. Knit with tan yarn for (8) rows according to the graph:

  13. Start with row 1. Weave the needles from back to front to cover the stitch marked with the (.).
  14. Drag the yarn to the next tan stitch in the row. Follow the graph row 1 until all the stitches are covered in tan yarn, front to back, as indicated on graph.
  15. Lay the tan yarn aside.
  16. Pick up the main color. Weave in stockinette stitch, skipping the needles covered with the tan yarn. Hook over all needles.
  17. Follow the row 2 on the graph using the tan yarn starting from the right end. Pick up the main color and weave all empty needles in Stockinette Stitch. Hook over all.
  18. Cut the main color and knot.
  19. Row 3 thru 7 is knit in all tan yarn.
  20. Row 8-Weave the Tan yarn in Stockinette skipping every 3rd needle.
  21. Tie on the main color and cut the tan yarn. Fill in the empty needles with main color. Hook over.
  22. Continue with main color in Stockinette for additional 20 rows to complete top of hat.
  23. Bind Off and Finishing:
  24. Cut double strand of Rust yarn approximately 20” long to make anchor yarn across stitches.
  25. Lay yarn between boards over last row of knitting. Bind Off over the anchor yarn. This will be your hat top.
  26. Bind off loosely at original anchor yarn at brim of hat for a nice smooth finish.
  27. Knit Hat Back same as front.
  28. Sew side seams together to join the front and back of hat in matching yarns. Tie anchor yarns together at top of hat to have one continuous yarn. Pull yarn snuggly and tie securely for top of hat.
  29. Pull tails to inside of hat with crochet hook and trim.
  30. Fold up brim of hat at decrease row. What a Great Hat!
