Scrap Fabric Rolled Rosette Barrette

Materials:

  • Fabric strips
  • Felt scraps
  • Barrettes or hair clips
  • Thread
  • Hot glue gun
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing needle

Instructions:

  1. Cut fabric scraps into strips. You can adjust the size of your rosette by changing the length and width of the strips.

  2. Roll fabric strips into rosettes. This process is much easier to show than tell, so I made a video:

For those of you who prefer written directions: Fold the fabric strip in half horizontally. Fold one end over several times, creating the center. Holding on to these folds, begin wrapping the fabric around the center (the fabric will build on itself). To create the rose petal texture, twist the fabric as you wrap. When you reach the end of the fabric strip, place a dot of hot glue on the back, then fold the fabric end over and press into place.

  3. Cut circles out of felt. (Make them just large enough for your rosettes to fit.)

  4. Glue rosettes to the felt using your hot glue gun.

  5. Cut off any extra felt.

  6. With your needle and thread, secure the rosette group to the hair clip. Make sure that your first stitch goes through the felt so it stays securely in place.

Note: Depending on the type of clip you're using, you might also want to try jewelry wire, floral wire, or fishing line.

  7. Tie off the thread, and it's ready to wear!

Thanks for the tutorial video, very helpful! I have made similar rosettes and after the glue dried, I secured with a few tacking stitches done with button thread. Depending on the look you are going for, you could add a few tiny pearls or clear sequins to replicate dew drops, or if you aren't pleased with the center, add a sequin or button to the center. These can be used for hair barrels or lapel or dress pins, or even to embellish a hat or purse! You could even put a few here and ther on a table for a pretty centerpiece or table arrangement!

Ugh the image in step 2 doesn't show so I can't click on it. This might be an issue for the computer I am on I will try it from my home computer.

Thank you so much. I watched the video several times and now the rosettes are very easy. I am making matching barrettes and found this perfect!

love it, going to do

@MissPatti, I just played the video and no ad for baby diapers appeared on our end. Please try again. To view the video, simply click on the image in step 2 and it should automatically begin to play. I hope this helps! --Editor of FaveCrafts

I would love to have a video of this project but everytime I click on "video" I get an ad about baby diapers. I get awfully tired of this happening. It also happens in the middle of a download. I realize that that is how you pay for your site but it won't work if everyone leaves because of this problem. Ihave to reprint too many because of ads being printer on my downloads.

@MissPatti The ads on the video are not the Favecrafts.com fault. Actually, the video is posted with Youtube and Youtube is in charge of all these commercials that show up on videos. If you wait until the add is over, it'll play. While the other ads might be from the site (which if the instructions are copy and pasted into a word doc and then printed, then you can delete the ads), but you can't blame them for the video ads.
