You don't need to spend money at the store for your precious little one. Instead, you can make a crochet baby hat all on your own with this Impossibly Cute Baby Skull Hat. This tutorial will show you how to make a cute, warm hat with a fun skull motif (and eyelashes for little girls). If you're a beginner, these crochet baby hat patterns will make you feel more comfortable. This unique pattern will be perfect atop any baby's little head.

Materials:

  • Yarn needles
  • Black yarn
  • 2 contrasting colored yarns

Abbreviations:

  • MC =Main Color
  • CC = Contrast Color
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dec = yarn over and draw up a loop in next hdc, draw up a loop in next hdc, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook

Instructions:

Cap

  1. Magic Ring
     
  2. Round 1: With MC Ch 2, 12 hdc in ring; join with a sl st in first hdc – 12 hdc.
     
  3. Round 2:  Ch 2, 2 hdc in each hdc around, join.
     
  4. Round 3:  Ch 2, [1 hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc] around, join.
     
  5. Round 4:  With CC, Ch 2, [1 hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc] around, join.
     
  6. Round 5: With MC, Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc around, join.
     
  7. Round 6: Repeat 5
     
  8. Round 7: With CC, Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc around, join.
     
  9. Round 8 - 9: Repeat 7
     
  10. Round 10: With MC, Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc around, join.
     
  11. Round 11: Repeat 10
     
  12. Round 12: With CC, Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc around, join.
     
  13. Round 13 - 16: With MC, Ch 2, 1 hdc in each hdc around, join.

 

Earflap

  1. Row 1: With right side facing, join MC in 8th hdc from back joining, ch 2, hdc in next 10 hdc, turn.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 2, dec, hdc in next 7 hdc, dec, turn.
     
  4. Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc across, turn.
     
  5. Row 5: Ch 2, dec, hdc in next 5 hdc, dec, turn.
     
  6. Row 6: Ch 2, dec, hdc in next 3 hdc, dec, turn.
     
  7. Row 7: Ch 2, dec, hdc in next hdc, dec. Fasten off.
     
  8. *Repeat for the 2nd earflap.

 

Edging

With right side facing, join MC in any st on outer edge of hat, ch 1, sc evenly around entire edge of hat and earflaps, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

 

Ties

Cut 9 (3 of each color) strips of yarn double the length of your desired length for the ties.  Fold one bundle strands in half and attach through bottom end of one earflap. Divide strands in thirds and tightly braid strands together. Tie in an overhand knot at the end of the braid. Repeat on the other earflap.

 

Skull

  1. With Black yarn, magic ring...
     
  2. Round 1: Ch 2, 12 dc, join.
     
  3. Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each dc, join.
     
  4. Round 3:  Ch 1, sc around, join. Mouth: Ch 2, 1 hdc in the next 6 sc. Finish off.

 

Crossbones

Ch 8 hdc in 2nd space from hook, hdc to the end ch 2, 6 hdc into the end to form a rounded shape, join and finish off. *make 4 and use a yarn needle to sew these onto the skull. *use a yarn needle and gray yarn to sew on the face as pictured or as desired *sew skull onto the hat using a yarn needle and black yarn & finish!

Hi CherylAEM68--Thanks for your comment. I checked with the designer's original pattern and did not see a crochet hook sized listed there, either. Since this is for a baby, we suggest using a 4.5 or 5.0 mm crochet hook. If you want a larger hat, you can use a larger hook. Hope that helps!--FaveCrafts Editors
