Beachside Afghan

Materials:

  • 4 balls Red Heart® Soft® yarn in Off White (A)
  • 2 balls Red Heart® Soft® yarn in Seafoam (B)
  • 1 ball Red Heart® Soft® yarn in Deep Sea (C)
  • 1 ball Red Heart® Soft® yarn in Turquoise (D)
  • 1 ball Red Heart® Soft® yarn in Teal (E)
  • 6.5 mm [US K-10½] Susan Bates® Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Diagram

 

Gauge:  Square motif = 2½” (6.5 cm) across. Octagon motif = 6” (15 cm) across. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge given.

Beachside Afghan

Instructions:
Throw measures 32” x 49” (81.5 x 124.5 cm)

Square Motif (make 38)

  1. With A, ch 4, join with a slip st to form a ring.
     
  2. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 11 dc in ring; join with slip st in top of beg ch-3 – 12 dc.
     
  3. Round 2: Ch 3, dc in first st, 2 dc in each dc around; join with slip st in top of beg ch-3 – 24 dc.
     
  4. Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, *3 dc in next st, hdc in next st**, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, sc in next st; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

Octagon Motif (make 39: working 24 with A for 2nd color, 5 each with C, D, and E for 2nd color)

  1. With B, ch 4, join with a slip st to form a ring.
     
  2. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 15 dc in ring; join with slip st in top of beg ch-3 – 16 dc.
     
  3. Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first st, dc in next dc, *3 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with slip st in top of beg ch-3 – 32 dc.
     
  4. Round 3: Ch 3, *3 dc in next dc**, dc in each of next 3 dc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in last 2 dc; change to 2nd color, with 2nd color join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 48 dc. Fasten off B.
     
  5. Round 4: With 2nd color, ch 3, dc in next dc, *3 dc in next dc**, dc in each of next 5 dc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in each of last 3 dc; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 64 dc.
     
  6. Round 5: Ch 3, dc in next dc, *3 dc in next dc**, dc in each of next 7 dc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, dc in each of last 4 dc; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 80 dc. Fasten off 2nd color.

Finishing

  1. With A, sew motifs together following Assembly Diagram.

Border

  1. With right side facing, join A with a slip st along any st on outside edge, ch 3, dc in each dc around, working 3 dc in each outside corner; join with a slip st in beginning ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Yes, this afghan is labor intensive and probably would take a bit of time to complete. But look of the finished project is worth it. Great color scheme. It works up in a motif and then it is all joined together. I love the Red Heart Soft yarn. It can often be found on sale at the craft store that starts with an "M".
