Materials:

  • Bernat Felting Wool (75 g / 2.6 oz)
  • 2 (2-3) balls of #94012 (Meadow).

Gauge:
10 sc and 12 rows = 4 ins [10 cm].

How to Felt:

  • Using low water level, run a Hot/Cold cycle for 5 to 15 min. Add a pair of old jeans for agitation.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda for a small load. After one cycle, check for size. Repeat if necessary.
  • Run through the rinse and dry spin cycle.
  • Do not use a clothes dryer.
  • Lay felted piece onto a dry towel, away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Shape piece to correct measurements.
  • If an edge ripples, baste a thread through the edge and gather in. Remove the thread after the felting is dry.

Felting is a process, not a product. The wool "felts" when you wet it and it is hard to predict the amount of shrinkage of any product. So crochet the piece, wash it in hot water and use a form to make sure it will not shrink too much when it dries. Covering a posterboard cut out of your foot to retain the shape may help. You need to know that they will continue to shrink until the yarn fibers can't shrink so be careful in laundering it.

okay I do have difficulty with patterns so this is may just be me - my first attempt has yeilded a slipper that doesn't fit - I am thinking it is due to the "sew instep seam" if possible could someone help me with what that means-or does the felting make these fit - although I am unable to felt as I do not have "felting wool" sadly this is suppose to be very easy, so I know it has to be me and mis understanding the patterns - all that said, and admitted to I sure would love a little help keep crafting all

Your pattern doesn't say what size slipper it's for.

@ midnightnassau - you crochet the slippers with the felting wool and when you finish you proceed with the steps to felt them. That's why there are the important points to know at the beginning of the pattern as felting will shrink them but also make them warmer. Acrylic yarn does not felt and acrylic/wool mixes go strange so 100% wool is best but they all felt a bit differently depending how they are woven and what they are woven from. Hope I've made this clear enough.

I hate when I miss an important step in a pattern..........where do the crochet piece and the felt get together? Is the crocheted part crocheted right to the felt or is the felt added later and if so, how are they joined? Either I'm an idiot or the pattern assumes I know certain things (which, obviously I don't) or a third option........that step just isn't in here.

The crochet piece is what you are making into felt. You have to use wool and when you wash it; it shrinks and becomes matted and makes felt. There is not store bought felt involoved. You are creating it when you process your item.
