Flowers Knit Poncho

This free intermediate poncho pattern from Bernat Yarns uses a fair isle accent and a large flower pin for a look of fun elegance.
 

Flowers Knit Poncho
 

Materials:

  • Bernat® Satin (100 g/3.5 oz)
  • Size XS/M (L/2XL-3XL/5XL)
  • Main Color (MC) (Purple) 5 (6-7) balls
    • Contrast A (Green) 1 (1-1) ball
    • Contrast B (Blue) 1 (1-1) ball
    • Contrast C (White) 1 (1-1) ball
    • Contrast D (Pink) 1 (1-1) ball
  • Circular Knitting Needle: size 5 mm (U.S. 8) 32 ins [80 cm] long.
  • Knitting Needles: pair of size 5 mm (U.S. 8).
  • Double Pointed Knitting Needles: set of four size 5 mm (U.S. 8) or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • 2 stitch holders.
  • 1 safety pin for each flower

Sizes:
To fit bust measurement

  • Extra-Small/Medium
  • 28-38 ins [71-96.5 cm ]
  • Large-2 Extra-Large
  • 40-50" [101.5-127"]
  • 3 Extra-Large/5 Extra-Large
  • 52-62" [132-157.5"]

Guage:
18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

Abbreviations:
Alt = Alternate.
Beg = Beginning.
Cont = Continue(ity).
Dec = Decrease.
K = Knit.
P = Purl.
Pat = Pattern.
Psso = Pass slipped stitch over.
K2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.
P2sso = Pass 2 slipped stitches over.
P2togtbl = Purl next 2 stitches together through back loop.
Rem = Remaining.
Rnd(s) = Round(s).
Rep = Repeat.
RS = Right side.
Sl1 = Slip next stitch knitwise.
Sl1P = Slip next stitch purlwise.
Sl2 = Slip next 2 stitches together knitwise.
St(s) = Stitch(es).
Tog = Together.
WS = Wrong side.
Yfwd = Yarn forward.

Instructions:
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Note: When working from chart carry yarn not in use loosely across WS of work but never over more than 5 sts. When it must pass over more than 5 sts, weave it over and under color in use on next st or at center point of sts it passes over. The colors are never twisted around one another.

Poncho (make 2 pieces alike)
With circular needle and MC, cast on 173 (193-213) sts. Do not join.
Working back and forth across needle in rows, proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). K1. *K1. yfwd. K3. Sl2. K1. p2sso. K3. yfwd. Rep from * to last 2 sts. K2.
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows twice more, then 1st row once.
Next row: (WS). K13 (11-6). K2tog. *K22 (12-9). K2tog. Rep from * to last 14 (12-7) sts. K14 (12-7). 166 (180-194) sts.
Next 2 rows: Knit.
Proceed in stocking st as follows:
Next row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Work 3 rows even.
Rep last 4 rows to 152 (168-174) sts.
Next row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows to 98 sts. Change to straight needles when necessary.
Work Chart to end of chart, reading RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right, noting 12 st rep will be worked 7 times and AT SAME TIME, dec 1 st each end of needle as before on next and every following alt row 5 times. 86 sts.
Next row: (RS). With MC, K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows to 76 sts.
1st row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2. 74 sts.
2nd row: P2. P2togtbl. Purl to last 4 sts. P2tog. P2. 72 sts.
3rd row: (Eyelet row). K2. K2tog. *K2tog. yfwd. Rep from * to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2. 70 sts.
4th row: P2. P2togtbl. Purl to last 4 sts. P2tog. P2. 68 sts.
5th row: K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2. 66 sts.
Place rem sts on a stitch holder.

Finishing
Pin garment to measurements and cover with damp cloth, leaving cloth to dry.
Sew center front and back seams, matching Fair Isle pattern.

Collar
With RS of work facing and circular needle, (K66 across one piece, dec 6 sts evenly across) twice. 120 sts.
Next rnd: *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep last rnd until Collar from pick up row measures 1 inch [2.5 cm]. Cast off in pat.

Small Flower Pin
With set of double pointed needles and B, cast on 48 sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st for beg of rnd.
1st rnd: (RS). Purl.
2nd rnd: *Sl1P. K7. Rep from * around. Break B.
3rd and 4th rnds: With D, as 2nd rnd.
5th rnd: *Sl1P. Sl1. K1. psso. K3. K2tog. Rep from * around. 36 sts.
6th rnd: *Sl1P. K5. Rep from * around. Break D.
7th rnd:With C, *Sl1P. Sl1. K1. psso. K1. K2tog. Rep from * around. 24 sts.
8th rnd: *K4. Slip 3rd and 2nd sts over 4th st. Rep from * around. 12 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.

Large Flower Pin
With set of double pointed needles and D, cast on 54 sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join in rnd, placing marker on first st for beg of rnd.
1st and 2nd rnds: Purl.
3rd rnd: *Sl1P. K8. Rep from * to around. Break D.
4th to 6th rnds:With MC, purl.
7th rnd: *Sl1P. Sl1. K1. psso. K4. K2tog. Rep from * around. 42 sts.
8th rnd: *Sl1P. K6. Rep from * around. Break MC.
9th rnd:With A, *Sl1P. Sl1. K1. psso. K2. K2tog. Rep from * around. 30 sts.
10th rnd: *K5. Slip 4th, 3rd and 2nd sts over 5th st. Rep from * around. 12 sts.
Break yarn, leaving a long end. Thread end through rem sts and draw up tightly. Fasten securely.

Finishing
Sew safety pin to back of each Flower.
Pin flowers to Poncho as shown in picture.
