Hanging Bird Treats

Do you need homemade crafts for kids? Check out this hanging bird treats project by Amanda Formaro. It's a great project for a group or one-on-one, and it's one of our easiest bird seed projects.

Hanging Bird Treats

Materials:

  • 1 slice of sandwich bread for each hanger
  • Cookie cutter or paring knife
  • Yarn or other strong piece of string or cord
  • Peanut butter or vegetable shortening
  • Wild bird seed

Instructions:

  1. Use a cookie cutter to create shapes from slices of sandwich bread. We did stars and circles for our treats.

  2. Let bread sit on the counter until dried out, a couple of hours should do the trick.

  3. Line a plate with bird seed.

  4. Use a toothpick or wooden skewer to poke a hole through the bread for the string. Be sure that you leave enough room above the hole so that it doesn't tear.

  5. Thread string through the hole and gently tie in a knot.

  6. Spread both sides of bread shape with peanut butter. Coat with bird seed by laying it on the bird seed lined plate and turning over to coat thoroughly.

  7. Hang your creation outside.

I foun this info on this subject: Some people refuse to offer peanut butter to birds with the misconception that the sticky treat will become stuck in their bills and throats, killing the birds. This is another complete falsehood, and there is no recorded evidence of peanut butter ever being a problem for birds. Peanut butter is actually a very nutritious treat, high in calories and fat content, that many bird species prefer, including nuthatches, chickadees, woodpeckers and jays. If you are still concerned with how sticky the peanut butter is, blend it with cornmeal or flour to make it more crumbly.

Your birdtreat craft looks great, especially for kids however I read recently in a notice put out by the wildlife federation that peanutbutter is not to be used for birds as it actually clogs their airways and they die. Same goes for using lint from lint traps or wool scraps for them to build nests. What we think is helping them is actually killing them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. signed: For the Birds.
