Curly Twirly Wreath

Materials:

  • 1 ball Red Heart® Boutique Ribbons® yarn in Rosebud (A)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® yarn in Perfect Pink (B)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® yarn in Dark Orchid (C)
  • 1 skein Red Heart® Super Saver® yarn in Razzle (D)
  • 5 mm [US 8] Susan Bates® Knitting Needles
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks or tacky glue
  • Yarn needle
  • 12" (30.5 cm) Styrofoam® wreath form
  • Rustproof straight pins

 

Gauge:  17 sts = 4" [10 cm];  23 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Stockinette st using B, C and D. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.

 

Notes and Special Abbreviations:

  • Kfb = Knit in front and back loops of the same st.
  • For ease in wrapping wreath, wind a 5" [12.8 cm] ball in B and wind A into a ball.  

 

Instructions:

Wreath

  1. With B, tie a knot around the wreath where the Styrofoam® joins to prevent a bump. Wrap the yarn around the wreath making sure there are no gaps creating a solid covering. Every few wraps tighten and twist the yarn with your hand on the wreath. Continue in this manner until the entire wreath is covered.

  2. With A, wrap Styrofoam® wreath completely covering; use straight pins to keep wraps and ends in place as needed.

Large Flowers (Make 3 in B, 2 in C and 2 in D)

  1. Cast on 30 sts.
     
  2. Row 1 (Right Side): Knit.
     
  3. Row 2: Purl.
     
  4. Row 3: Kfb in first and last st–32 sts.
     
  5. Row 4: Purl.
     
  6. Row 5: Kfb in first and last st–34 sts.
     
  7. Row 6: Purl.
     
  8. Bind off all sts knitwise; fasten securely leaving a 15" [38 cm] tail for sewing.

Small Flowers (Make 2 each in B, C and D)

  1. Cast on 15 sts.
     
  2. Row 1 (Right Side): Knit.
     
  3. Row 2: Purl.
     
  4. Bind off all sts knitwise; fasten securely leaving a 15" [38 cm] tail for sewing.

Curly Decorations (Make 1 each in B and C)

  1. Cast on 30 sts.
     
  2. Row 1 (Right Side): Knit.
     
  3. Row 2: Purl.
     
  4. Row 3: Kfb in each st across–60 sts.
     
  5. Row 4: Purl.
     
  6. Bind off all sts knitwise; fasten securely; weave in ends. With wrong side facing out, twist strip until it stays curled.

Finishing

  1. Using one B and one C large flower, place strips together with wrong sides facing, right sides are facing out. Treat B and C as one flower.
     
  2. With cast on row serving as the base of the flower, weave tail of yarn through both cast on rows rolling into a rosebud shape; B will be the inner flower, C the outer flower. Pull tightly and sew securely.
     
  3. Weave and roll the other large flowers in the same manner; right sides facing out, then mold with your fingers for rosebud or shape desired. Roll small flowers without weaving and sew securely.

  4. Arrange large and small flowers along top and bottom center of wreath as desired. Place Curly Deco’s underneath large flowers. Pin flowers for placement before gluing in place.

Hanger

  1. Cut 20" [50.8 cm] of A. Place around the top of the wreath; fold in half and tie in a secure knot.
