Summer Floral ShawlBy: Kim Rutledge for Caron Yarn An array of crochet flowers in bright colors such as Watermelon and Lemonade creates a shawl perfect for cool summer nights. This intermediate shawl crochet pattern includes an assembly diagram.
MATERIALS:
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Wrap measures approximately 52"/132 cm wide x 32"/81.5 cm long
GAUGE In Triple picot (TP) pattern, using I-9 (5.5 mm) hook, One TP = 3"/7.5 cm and 6 3/4 rows = 4"/10 cm
STITCHES USED Chain (ch), double crochet (dc) single crochet (sc), slip stitch (slip st), treble crochet (tr)
SPECIAL TERMS TP: Triple picot – sc in indicated st, [ch 7, sc in same st] 3 times. tr4tog cluster: Treble crochet 4 together in a cluster – *Yarn over twice, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (2 loops on hook); yarn over twice, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; repeat from * 1 more time, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook. Note: Tr4tog cluster is worked over 2 stitches. The first 2 treble stitches are worked in the first stitch; the second 2 treble stitches are worked in the second stitch.
NOTES Wrap is worked from top wide edge to bottom point.
WRAP With larger hook and A, ch 287. Row 1: TP in 12th ch from hook (beginning ch counts as 4 ch of foundation, dc, ch 4), ch 4, skip next 4 ch, dc in next ch, *ch 4, skip next 4 ch, TP in next ch, ch 4, skip next 4 ch, dc in next ch; repeat from * across, turn—28 TP. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first dc, ch 1, skip next ch-4 space, sc in next ch-7 space (first ch-7 space of TP), [ch 3, sc in next ch-7 space] twice, ch 1, skip next ch-4 space, *sc in next dc, ch 1, skip next ch-4 space, sc in next ch-7 space, [ch 3, sc in next ch-7 space] twice, ch 1, skip next ch-4 space; repeat from * across, sc in last dc (5th ch of turning ch), turn. Note: The edging will be worked into the side of last single crochet of the Row 2 repetitions. Row 3 (decrease row): Ch 1, slip st in each st to center sc of first TP, ch 7 (counts as dc, ch 4), skip next ch-3 space, skip next sc, skip next ch-1 space, TP in next sc, ch 4, skip next ch-1 space, skip next sc, skip next ch-3 space, dc in next sc, *ch 4, skip next ch-3 space, skip next sc, skip next ch-1 space, TP in next sc, ch 4, skip next ch-1 space, skip next sc, skip next ch-3 space, dc in next sc; repeat from * across working last dc in center sc of last TP; leave remaining sts unworked, turn—27 TP. Rows 4–55: Repeat last 2 rows 26 times—1 TP. Row 56: Repeat Row 2. Do not turn at end of Row.
EDGING Row 1: Working along row edges of side, *ch 5, sc in last sc at end of next Row 2 repetition; repeat from * to corner; pivot to work along opposite side of foundation ch (top edge), working in first dc of Row 1 (formed by 3 chains of foundation ch) sc in next 2 ch, 3 sc in next ch (first top corner made), **sc in next 4 ch, sc in base of next TP, sc in next 4 ch, sc in base of next dc; repeat from ** to last dc of row, work 2 more sc in same dc (second top corner made); pivot to work along row edges of opposite side, 2 sc over post of same dc, sc in sc at beginning of next Row 2 repetition, ***ch 5, sc in first sc of next Row 2 repetition; repeat from *** to beginning of last Row 2 repetition (bottom corner). Fasten off.
FLOWER (make 46 according to chart) Make flowers in the following color combinations and quantities:
With first color and leaving a 6"/15 cm tail for sewing, ch 4; join with slip st in first ch to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 1, 9 sc in ring; join with slip st in first sc—9 sc. Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first sc—18 sc. Fasten off. Round 3: Join second color with sc in any sc, ch 4, [tr4tog cluster (petal made), ch 4, sc in next sc, ch 4] 5 times, tr4tog cluster, ch 4; join with slip st in first sc—6 petals. Fasten off. Arrange all flowers according to placement diagram and pin in place. Using yarn needle, draw 6"/15 cm tail of flower to wrong side of wrap at base of TP. Work a French knot to secure the yarn, pass the needle under knot attaching flower to wrap, do not pull yarn all the way through (leave a loop), pass needle through loop just made, pull tight, weave in end. To join edges of flowers to wrap, work Flower Edging Round around each flower. Flower Edging Round: Join first color with sc in same stitch of Round 2 as any sc of Round 3 (working over Round 3), ch 4, insert hook in top of next petal (tr4tog cluster) and through a st on the wrap below, yo, draw loop back through st on wrap and top of petal, yo and draw through both loops on hook (joining-sc worked), ch 4, *sc in same st on Round 2 as next sc of Round 3, ch 4, work joining-sc through top of next petal and wrap, ch 4; repeat from * around to first sc; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.
FINISHING Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
