Question! First, Bless your big blue Smurf heart for sharing this pattern. My Grandson is going to love his, he was a Smurf for Halloween last year,2013. What size yarn did you use, size 4 knitting worsted? Also did you use a smaller hook for the Child's size, and what shade of blue did you use? I want to be sure to have everything right when I get started. Thank you for the pattern and the help. Sheila

What size needle to use for each? Adult? Teen? Child?

I'm confused with row 28. Is it dc in first stitch and then next stitch is sc in front loop all the way around, or dc in back loops only??

this is great!! My 7 yr. old grand daughter Addison loves Smurfette, as her mommy did, several years ago. Tee Hee!! Do you all have a patteren for her? Please?

I am stumped on two stitches: "dctog" and "sctog" also do you have a photo to show the steps. not sure what you are trying to convey in the pattern.

DCTOG means double crotchet together and is used to refer to a cluster stitch, which is made up of a number of stitches. This is a type of stitch, which decrease the number of stitches compared to the preceding row. You should put in the hook into the slip stitch and draw up a loop. i give you this link ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnUacn_oImQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zxV1em2670 this is for sctog

I am making this hat but I am stumped on two stitches: "dctog" and "sctog"

I like this hat, does anyone have the pattern for the stuffed smurf dolls??

ty for the pattern my niece is just crazy bout them n ive been looking for one now im going to surprise her w it when im done again ty

i need a little bit of help. for number 21, anchoring the top part of the hat, i dont understand it. is the "ball" shape supposed to become flat? im very confused about this step and dont understand what it is supposed to be like when finished.

To keep the hat flopped forward, I took a yarn needle and some yarn and basically attached the top of the hat to the middle front of the hat. This keeps the white part of the smurf hat in place.

Still stuck on row 28,need clearer instructions, what do you mean front and back of hat?? are we supposed to divide the hat or what???please help. thanks

On Line 13: Row 28, you will lay your hat flat. The back half of the hat you will dc and the front half of the hat you will sc (in front loops only). This way the hat will get taller on the back and shorter in the front. It starts to curve forward. **Anchoring the hat. The reason for the anchor is to keep the hat in place. Basically fold the hat forward half way down. Take some white yarn and tie the top of the hat to the font middle of the hat. It might make more sense when you get to that part. I hope this helps.

I am having problems with line 13 for row 28.. Do I put both the dc and sc in the same stitch?? could you please explain this so I can understand.? and again on line 21 for the anchoring of the top. thanks

There is still no explanation of what it means to dc in back half and then sc in front half. How, where. Am going mad trying to figure this out. Can you please send me the explanation to my email, at heathermcantrell@gmail.com

If you have not received an answer to your question yet about dc in back half of stitch & sc in front half. When you are crocheting there are two loops to a stitch, one at the back of your work & one at the front. You dc into the back loop, then sc into the front loop. Hope this helps.

For this pattern I wanted the back half of the hat taller, so by making double crochets in the back part of the hat and changing to sc when you work the front part of the hat, it will make the hat slouch forward. Lay the hat flat and put a stitch maker in each side. DC across the back of hat from one stitch marker to the next, then SC across the front till you reach the stitch marker on the other side.

Please tell me what you mean when you say to dc in bck half of hat, and sc in front half of hat. I have tried all ways possible, and I can't figure out what to do. Please email me the information. Thanks.

I made this hat...As cute as it looked, I found it too tall and top heavy for a child to wear..But all is not lost...It now holds 2 rolls of toilet paper in the downstairs bathrom!!

May I suggest you make 2 or 3 rows less in the blue and white to make the hat shorter. Then you adjust the eye size to fit them in. Hope this works.

Adorable hat. Have one in the making. But I found the ear directions to be either incorrect or incomplete. Had to ad-lib.

I had fun making my hat into Smurfette...I made her nose smaller, and gave her some eyelashes and long yellow yarn hair. I did, however only make one ear hoping that it looks like her other one is hidden. (also, instead of button eyes, I crocheted black circles)

Would you like to please just send a bit of the pattern to this comment line, so I can do Smurfette as well. You are very cleaver to do this.

It might be alright for kids. Maybe. But, no, I wouldn't ever make something like this, because I wouldn't wear it and don't know anyone else who would. And, this includes the kids I know.

i appreciate fave crafts very much, but i think if they put a pattern out here, someone there (or the pattern owner) should check periodically to see what/if CONSISTENT problems or questions come up on said pattern....just sayin.......unmonitored submissions with problems and concerns means frustrated crocheters.

I didn't see these comments until today. This pattern was posted in allfreecrochet.com. I didn't realize that it was in favecrafts.com as well. No questions were posted on the other site or in ravelry. So I guess I will say that is why I haven't commented...

May I 'assume' that dctog means dc2tog?? It is written that way in all the areas but it doesn't make sense that way. To dc together you need more than one, at least. Correct? Also, there is no list of crochet hook sizes or hat sizes under materials needed. I found them later down in the pattern. Need to see those things at a glace... Just saying........ But really cute hat!!!

Have finished the basic hat supposedly for my grandson. The blue comes up to my own crown and the white seems too long. Perhaps I will try it again, and with a smaller hook and perhaps less blue rows.....boohoo, but I won't give up. I am sure the ears and nose and eyes will also make a huge difference!

jeba I ended the ears with row four. They look great on the hat. Still looking for smurffette hat to match. Anyone??????

I was looking for a Smurf hat pattern and found this one. I thought it was really cute for my 5 yr old nieces Smurf themed birthday. I turned it into Smurfette by using yellow yarn for hair and making eyelashes. I only made one ear though because she has her hair over the other. I don't think I can upload a picture (I am new to this site).

Do the instructions for the ears end with row 4

Hi - I am about to answer my own question ladies. Row 28: this is what I did. The 3-chain is the first of 14 dc's I made for the back (I am doing the child size) next 13 stitches sc, putting hook into just the front part of the stitch as per pattern. Continue same in following 4 rows. Looks OK! That's how far I have got. Good luck.

Up to row 21, how do you fold top to anchor it to look right?

Love this hat does anyone have a pattern for smurfette hat to match ?

I LOVE this! does anyone know how to adjust this for a 3 -6 month old???? her head size is 15 inches.....thanks for any help

Going to try...thanks crochet mom!

Does anyone know how to do... Row 28?... If not how would we find out? Thanks!! crochet mom

I have finally figured out about that dctog. It is a decrease, I was just doing it wrong,I now have the correct # of sts in my rows! hOORAY!! HERE IS HOW TO DO THEM: (yo,inset hook,yo draw loopthrough, draw through 2-loops on hook)in each of the stitches indecated, yo,draw through all loops on hook. (dc dec) hopes this helps you all. Crochet mom

I am stuck on row 28. I don't understand what the directions mean. Please help...it is so cute so far!

vivaj234, I took a chance & so far paid off.. I folded the hat in half making sure it was centered in the middle & counted for back side middle 8dc sts the started counting across from there to across front to my marker 18sts to where the hat was folded then rom there I started dc's again till where you join w/slst. (count your ch3-joining st as your 33rd) somehow it came out to be the 33stiches. Hope this helps! crochet mom

Very cute! My 38yr old daughter & grandson wants one! I'm in the process of the adult sz, but having trouble with the DC in nest 4-sts,then dctog part. Are you meaning a DC decrease?? I've tried different ways & the pattern isn't working out. (not having enough sts at end) Can you clarify?? Thanks! Crochet mom

Sorry I meant how many inches? I saw the number of chains but mine seemed rather tight....maybe I crocheted to tight

This hat is so cute. Does anyone know how long the chain of stitches should be for the adult hat? Teen hat?

Yip. Point 1 says 66 chain for Adult; 60 for Teen; 54 for Child (on first page where the picture is! Enjoy.

Smurf Hat Row 28-32: does not say HOW MANY dcs for back of hat and HOW MANY scs for front! - any suggestions, please?? Thank you!

your right! jcharles.. I'm just now starting row 26 ending with 33 sts. Since we will also end up with 33sts in row 28,I don't see how we can divide front & back sts evenly. I agree this is going to be alittle confusing! when would you know when to start the back/front? Can someone help us with that?? Thanks!! crochet mom

I love this! I never blog, but I have been into Smurfs since the 70's. I am going to make it as a decoration.

I emailed this to my girls and they all love it. One of them wants to know if you have a "Hello Kitty" crochet hat pattern.

My grandson will be absolutely crazy about this hat. Can't wait to make it!

I would make this hat just because it is so cute..I know so many smurf fans that would be happy to receive this gift..

I want to make this for my little nephew. It is super cute.

Thanks jasonkarina1923242. I thought it was going to be more complicated. so far, so good!

I need help on this hat asap. I started it and am stuck on the term "dctog".I never saw this before and everyone I've asked has no clue. I can't continue . Can anyone help?

It means you have to double crochet 2 stitches together.

I think this pattern is wonderful. I have a friend who has two little girls who will be thrilled to have one of these hats. I can't wait to make them.

I think it's cute! I used to collect Smurfs (the little ones) and I would have made this hat in a heartbeat back then! My ex-husband used to say Smurfs were "satanic" (he was weird.) I've heard of people being scared of them, but I think they are darling! I used to have over 100 of them in my kitchen and it was so cool to wake up and go in there and see all those little blue smiles!

This looks like a great hat for kids...Thinking of making some for our local hospital kids...It will certainly bring a smile to their faces

Could you please provide this as a knitting pattern I cannot follow a crochet pattern

Will definitely make this for my Grand Daughters who just love the Smurfs

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this a "Smurfette" hat?

You could try adding a few spirals to the back bottom of the hat...the only difference between the two is the longer hair

I have a friend that we call Smurf. Hope I can make it for her!! I will put a pink ribbon on it. She is a breast cancer survivor!

I will definitely make this smurfy hat for my three grandsons!

I agree with all who commented. I grew up with smurfs and this hat is very cute. I am deciding now who I can make it for maybe ME!

SMURFS RULE I think the Smurf Hat is very funny and cute. Not scary. My son loved Smurf cartoons and products 30 years ago, and the recent Smurf movie was a huge hit with this generation. I think every child would love one. When my son was a baby, the nursery was done in Smurf wallpaper, rugs, linens and curtains. We continued to purchase the radio, clock, figurines and stuffed dolls, t-shirts, etc. Even the Smurf big wheel when the time came for it! Your Smurf Hat is definitely a "MAKE IT." I am on it like a robin on a junebug

Entirely too cute!!!

To Cute! I would wear it and I know some kids that would to! T =)

So cute I have adult children who would wear this hat if I would make it for them! Hum, maybe a good idea for Christmas next year.

This is just adorable! Can't wait to make it!!!

I have a granddaughter that loves different hats, she is going to love this one!!

would love to make this but unable to print a copy of the pattern.

Try copy and pasting the instructions to a word document. I have done that many times in the past. You won't have the picture, but the written instructions will copy.

If you "right click" on the picture you should be able to copy and paste this into a word document also!!!

love this hat, but I cannot crochet, need the pattern converted to knit, someone do it!

This is so cute! I can't wait to make this hat.

I love this hat and plan to make one for my granddaughter

Is there a pattern for a knitted smurf hat as i would love to knit 2 for my grandchildren

Cute Cute Cute... I so want to make this!!!

I would love to make this hat but cannot get the hang of crocheting. Any suggestions as to how a 75 year old can learn?

You are never to old to learn! Favecrafts offers many basic tutorials that you will find so easy to follow along with. It is much easier than reading if you are, like me, a visual learner.

go to youtube and type in learning to crochet for beginners or how to crochet for beginners. lots of easy to follow visual tutorials from around the world

Thank you soo much for the pattern. I've been looking for a Smurf hat pattern for several months now. Love it!!! Going to make some for the neices and nephews> Again THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!

Absolutely! My 12-year old niece is crazy about crazy and unusual hats!

awesome site, the people that take the time to make tutorials and write out all the directions,,, hands down,, the best,, thanks,,,

I would love to make these for my grandkids. I think my oldest daughter would like one too and she is 26.

Oh My Goodness I think this is the cutest thing ever, thank you thank you for sharing for this pattern!

NEVER, never, never. What an embarrassment for a kid to be seen in it. Someday the kid will grow up, and someone will have taken a picture, and the face that was under that hat will remain red for a long time. Good crocheting, though. LOL

You betcha I would make this hat, I would make it in a heart beat for my grandkids and I have 20 of them. I think I would even make it for my totally awesome 3 daughters and 3 daughter in laws. Smurfs are in again and my "hats off" to the awesome job you did with coming up with this, most excellent...

I've got it on my to-do list! My Granddaughter loves the Smurfs - Thank you!

I don't have kids so this would not be for me. I never really liked the smurfs.

Very creative and well done! Sadly, I am not this good yet, but am saving it for the future!! Nice job!!

I think this is so cute!

I would love to make this hat but add yellow yarn to make Smurfette for my daughter but I am not that good yet so sadly for me I have to wait and practice some more to make this hat

I created a Sponge Bob hat for my great grandson and he loved it. He wanted to wear it all the time. I will have alot of fun with Smurf and know that my great grandchildren will love this hat also. Thanks for all the great patterns.

Where did you find the Sponge Bob Pattern? My neices and nephews would love it.

you could change the nose to orange/red and keep the top of the hat blue and make a "Grover" from Sesame Street . . . very cute either way!
