I would love to try making this hat, however wool and nylon are itchy materials for me. Is there any other yarn that can be substituted? (my preferrence is cotton).

The yarn she used is a super bulky weight (6). You can search on line for a super bulky weight cotton yarn to find a substitute...I found several when I searched. You would need about 230 yards for the set. Hope this helps.

kraftfun - Row 2 will have 12 and row 3 will have 24. Take another look and you will see Rows 2 and 3 are on the same line.

since you have 6 sc in row 1 row 2 you put 2 sc in each = 12 not 24. what do I have wrong?

Go back and read directions again... it said that round 2 and 3 were worked the same - round 2 = 12 round 3=24 . She just combined the total stitches. I had to re-read the directions also !!
