Aurora Borealis Crocheted Hat

Aurora Borealis Crocheted Hat

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in color of your choice:  Main color (MC) 200 yards
  • Worsted weight yarn in color of your choice:  Contrast Color 1(CC1) 20 yards
  • Worsted weight yarn in color of your choice:  Contrast Color 2(CC2) 20 yards
  • Worsted weight yarn in color of your choice:  Contrast Color 3(CC3) 40 yards
  • Hook US H (5.00 mm)

 

Gauge:  8 dc x 4 Rounds = 2”

 

Size:

  • Kids: 19 – 21” x 7” long
  • Teens/Adults: 21 – 24” x 8” long

 

Abbreviations:

  • beg:     beginning
  • BLO:   Work in Back Loop Only
  • BPdc:  Back Post double crochet
  • ch:        chain
  • dc:        double crochet
  • FPdc:  Front Post double crochet
  • hdc:     half double crochet
  • Rnd:    Round
  • sc:         single crochet
  • sl st:     slip stitch
  • st(s):    stitch(es)

 

Instructions:
Ch1 and Ch2 at beg of row does not count as a stitch

Crown
At end of each round, join with sl st to beg st.

  1. Rnd 1: With MC, make a magic loop, 10 sc in loop, join.
     
  2. Rnd 2: Ch2 (does not count as stitch here or throughout), 2dc in each st, join. (20 dc)
     
  3. Rnd 3: Ch2, dc in same st, 2dc in next st, [dc in next, 2dc in next] around to end, join (30 dc)
     
  4. Rnd 4: Ch2, dc in same st and next st, 2dc in next st, [dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next] around to end, join. (40 dc)
     
  5. Rnd 5: Ch2, dc in same st and next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, [dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next] around to end, join. (50 dc)
     
  6. Rnd 6: Ch2, dc in same st and next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, [dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next] around to end, join. (60 dc)
     
  7. Rnd 7: Ch2, dc in same st and next 4 sts, 2dc in next st, [dc in next 5 sts, 2dc in next] around to end, join. (70 dc – 6 ½” diameter)
     
  8. Rnd 8 (Adult Size ONLY--For Kids sizes skip to Round 9): Ch2, dc in same st and next 5 sts, 2dc in next st, [dc in next 6 sts, 2dc in next] around to end, join. (80 dc – 7 ½” diameter)
     
  9. Rnd 9:  Ch2, dc in each st, join.
     
  10. Repeat Round 9 until hat measures 3 ½” from crown for Kids and 4 ½” for Teen/Adult.

Band
For the remainder of the hat, the stitch count will be the same as your last Round worked.

  1. Rnd 1: Join CC1, working in BLO, ch1, sc in each st, join.
     
  2. Rnd 2: Working in BLO, ch1, sc in each st, join.
     
  3. Rnd 3: Join CC2, working in BLO, ch2, dc in each st.  Join with sl st to beg dc, join.
     
  4. Rnd 4: Join CC3, ch1, hdc in each st, join.
     
  5. Rnd 5: Ch1, [FPdc, BPdc] to end, join.
     
  6. Rnds 6 – 8: Ch1, FPdc in each FPdc and BPdc in each BPdc of the previous round, join.
     
  7. Rnd 9: Join CC2, ch2, dc in each st, join.
     
  8. Rnd 10: Join CC1, ch1, sc in each st, join.
     
  9. Rnd 11:  Working in BLO, ch1, sc in each st, join.
     
  10. Rnd 12:  Join MC, working in BLO, ch1, sc in each st, join.
     
  11. Rnd 13: Ch1, hdc in each st, join.
     
  12. Last Rnd: Ch1, turn, working from inside of hat, sl st loosely in each st around, join.  Fasten off.
