Touch of the Countryside Floral Crochet Throw

Add a touch of the countryside to any room. Crochet your own floral afghan from Red Heart Yarns in sunny colors to enjoy all year round. This fall and winter, when the flowers aren’t blooming, you can crochet your own dimensional floral blocks and dream of a country garden.

MATERIALS:

  • Red Heart® “Super Saver” (Art. E300) solid color 7 oz (198 g), 364 yd (333 m); multi color and print 5 oz (141 g), 244 yd (223 m), flecks 5 oz (141g), 260 yd (238 m) skeins: 4 skeins 931 Seagrass A, 2 skeins 668 Honeydew B, 5 skeins 320 Cornmeal C
  • Crochet hook: 5mm [US H-8]

Notes:

  • Throw measures 47” x 56”.
  • GAUGE: Blocks measure 8” x 8”. First 7 rounds = 5” across. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Floral Block (Make 30)

  1. With A, ch 5; join with a slip st to form a ring.
     
  2. Round 1: Ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 3] 8 times; do NOT join.
     
  3. Round 2: [(Sc, 3 dc, sc) all in next ch-3 space] 8 times; do not join – 8 petals made.
     
  4. Round 3: Working behind petals of previous round, sc in first sc of Round 1, ch 4, [sc in next sc of Round 1, ch 4] 7 times; do not join.
     
  5. Round 4: [(Sc, dc, 3 tr, dc, sc) all in next ch-4 space] 8 times; join with a slip st to first sc – 8 petals made. Fasten off.
     
  6. Round 5: Working behind petals of previous round, join B in first sc of Round 3; ch 1, sc in first sc of Round 3, ch 5, [sc in next sc of Round 3, ch 5] 7 times; join with a slip st in first sc.
     
  7. Round 6: * (Sc, dc, 2 tr, ch 3, 2 tr, dc, sc) all in next ch-5 space, ch 3, sc in next ch-5 space, ch 3 **; repeat from * around, end at **; join in first sc – 4 corner shells made. Fasten off.
     
  8. Round 7: Join C in ch-3 space of any corner shell; ch 3 (counts as first dc), (3 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) all in corner ch-3 space, * skip next 3 sts, 2 tr in next sc, 2 tr in next ch-3 space, skip next sc, 2 tr in next ch-3 space, 2 tr in next sc, skip next 3 sts **, (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) all in next corner ch-3 space; repeat from * around, end at **; join with a slip st in top of ch-3.
     
  9. Rounds 8 and 9: Ch 3, dc in each st around and work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in each corner ch-2 space; join in top of ch-3 – 24 dc between ch-2 spaces at end of Round 9. Fasten off at end of Round 9.
     
  10. Round 10: Join B around the post of 2nd dc after the corner space 2 rounds below (Round 8); ch 1, sc around post of same dc, working in Round 8 around, * [ch 5, skip next dc, sc around post of next dc] 9 times, ch 5, skip ch-2 space, skip next dc **, sc around post of next dc; repeat from * around, end at **; join in first sc. Fasten off.
     
  11. Round 11: Join A in corner ch-5 space of Round 10 AND corner ch-2 space of Round 9 together; ch 1, * working through both corner ch-5 space of Round 10 and corner ch-2 space of Round 9, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner space, sc in next 3 dc of Round 9, [ch 1, skip next dc, sc in next ch-5 space of Round 10 and next dc of Round 9 together] 9 times, sc in next 3 dc; repeat from * around; join in first sc. Fasten off.
     
  12. Round 12: Join C in any sc; ch 1, sc in each st and ch-1 space around and work (sc, ch 2, sc) all in each corner ch-2 space; join in first sc – 28 sc between corner ch-2 spaces. Fasten off.

Assembly

  1. With C, slip st Blocks together 5 wide x 6 long, using back loop of each corresponding st of Round 12, making sure that each junction of four blocks and all other corners are evenly spaced so design will not be distorted.

Border

  1. Join C in first sc after corner ch-2 space on a short side.
     
  2. Round 1: Ch 3, dc in each sc around and work 2 dc in each joining seam and 5 dc in each corner ch-2 space; join in top of ch-3.
     
  3. Round 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc around and work 5 dc in 3rd dc of each corner 5-dc group; join.
     
  4. Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next 25 dc, skip next 3 dc, 9 tr in next dc, * skip next 3 dc, dc in next 23 dc, skip next 3 dc, 9 tr in next dc *; repeat from * to * twice more; ** skip next 3 dc, dc in next 26 dc, skip next 3 dc, 9 tr in next dc, skip next 3 dc, dc in next 27dc, skip next 3 dc, 9 tr in next dc; repeat from * to * 4 times; skip next 3 dc, dc in next 26 dc, skip next 3 dc, 9 tr in next dc, skip next 3 dc **, dc in next 27 dc, skip next 3 dc, 9 tr in next dc; repeat from * to * 3 times; repeat from ** to **; dc in next dc; join.
     
  5. Round 4: Slip st in next 2 dc, ch 3, dc in next 21 dc, * skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 3 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 2 dc in next tr, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 19 dc *; repeat from * to * 3 times more; dc in next 3 dc, ** skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 3 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 2 dc in next tr, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 23 dc; repeat from * to * 5 times; dc in next 3 dc, skip next 2 dc, 2 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 3 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 2 dc in next tr, skip next 2 dc **, dc in next 23 dc; repeat from * to * 4 times; dc in next 3 dc; repeat from ** to **; dc in next dc; join.
     
  6. Round 5: Ch 3, dc in each dc around; join. Fasten off.
     
  7. Round 6: Join B around post of beginning ch-3 of Round 4 in upper right hand corner; ch 1, sc around post of same dc, * ch 5, skip next dc of Round 4, sc around post of next dc of Round 4; repeat from * around; join in first sc. Fasten off.
     
  8. Round 7: Join A in first dc to the left of beginning ch-3 of Round 5; ch 1, sc in ch-5 space of Round 6 AND in same st as joining together, * ch 1, skip next dc, sc in next ch-5 space of Round 6 and next dc of Round 5 together; repeat from * around; ch 1; join.
     
  9. Round 8: Ch 1, sc in first sc, * sc in next ch-1 space, ch 3, slip st in last sc made **, sc in next sc; repeat from * around, end at **; join. Fasten off.
