Neapolitan Ice Cream Afghan

This light and lacy Neapolitan Ice Cream Afghan offers endless possibilities for color combinations.  Made with a combination of ripples and fan shells, this afghan may look challenging, but it's a very easy pattern to master.  This is a great crocheted afghan pattern for beginners and those looking for a quick and easy crochet pattern.

Neapolitan Ice Cream Afghan

Materials:

  • 2 skeins Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Aran
  • 1 skein Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Tea Leaf
  • 2 skeins Red Heart Classic Yarn in Sea Coral
  • 2 skeins Red Heart Classic Yarn in Tan
  • 5.0mm (US H-8) crochet hook, or size needed for gauge

 

Gauge: 

  • 4 rows – 3”
  • Fan shell, ripple (9 dc) – 5”

 

Special Stitch: 

  • Fan shell – (dc, [ch 1, dc] 4 times) in indicated space or stitch

Instructions:
Afghan Measures:  44” x 55”

  1. Row 1 (RS): With aran ch 130, dc in 4th ch from hook, *dc in each of next 3 ch, skip next 3 ch, fan shell in next ch, skip next 3 ch, dc in each of next 3 ch ** 3 dc in next ch, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in last ch, turn.
     
  2. Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first dc, * dc in each of next 3 dc, sc in first ch 3 space, (ch 3, sc) in each of next ch 3 spaces, skip next 2 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc**, 3 dc in next dc, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
     
  3. Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first dc, *dc in each of next 3 dc, skip next ch 3 loop, fan shell in next ch 3 loop, skip next (ch 3 loop, sc and dc), dc in each of next 3 dc**, 3 dc in next dc, repeat from * across ending last repeat at **, 2 dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.

Color Scheme

  1. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for a total of 74 rows ending with Row 2 as follows:  (4 rows aran, 6 rows tea leaf, 4 rows aran, 6 rows sea coral, 4 rows aran, 6 rows tan) 2 times, 4 rows aran, 6 rows tea leaf, 4 rows aran

Edging

  1. With sea coral working along top edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in right corner dc, [skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc] 2 times, * (sc, ch 3, sc) in each of next 3 ch-3 spaces, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc, [skip 1 dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next dc] 4 times, repeat from * across, (sc, ch 3, sc) in last dc.
     
  2. Working along side edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in each dc, (sc, ch 3, sc) in first bottom ch.
     
  3. Working along bottom edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch, [skip 1 ch, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch] across, (sc, ch 3, sc) in last ch.
     
  4. Working along side edge (sc, ch 3, sc) in each dc, join to beginning sc and fasten off.
