Decorate a summer fan in any way you like using Sakukra art materials. Use them to keep cool. Display them as works of art. Either way, easy to make fans are a fun project for a summer day, from Sakura of America.

THE BASICS FOR ALL 4 FANS:

  1. Use a fan template to draw a fan onto a standard 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. Do an internet search for “fan template” for a variety of fun shapes.

  2. Cut two pieces of heavy watercolor paper per fan and glue them together, a double layer for a durable fan.

Standard size fan handles available at Creative-Wholesale.com
Option: Use stir sticks from the paint store as fan handles.
Fan handles can be stained, colored or edged, or left plain.
To color and/or edge the handles, use Permapaque® Dual-point markers and/or Pentouch® in gold (Sakura of America, www.sakuraofamerica.com).

Adhesives:
Use glue stick or paper glue for paper layers of fans.
Use super hold double stick adhesive tape to attach fan handles.

1. WATERCOLORS & RUBBER STAMPS FAN

Watercolor Fan

  1. Use Koi® Water Colors (Sakura of America, www.sakuraofamerica.com) to apply a colorful wash to the fan shape, leaving a rounded area at the base. Add dry brush strokes to the fan shape, including the rounded area at the base.

  2. Randomly stamp Asian theme images (by Judi Kauffman for Red Castle, Inc.) with Adirondack Earthtones in Raisin (Ranger Industries). Use waterproof Pigma Micron® ink (Sakura of America, www.sakuraofamerica.com) to draw black lines at the base of the fan.

  3. Attach fan handle using super hold double stick adhesive tape.

2. ZENTANGLE®-INSPIRED FAN

Zentangle Fan

  1. Use a Pigma Micron® 08 pen in black (Sakura of America, www.sakuraofamerica.com) to draw simple shapes on the fan shape. For finer lines, use a 01 or 05 nib pen. Divide each shape into smaller sections. Leave a few open areas for contrast and balance. Using the same pen, fill all small sections with patterns. Use a Pigma® Brush pen in black to color the remaining open areas.

  2. Visit www.zentangle.com to learn more about Zentangle® patterns. The Zentangle® art form and method was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. Zentangle® is a registered trademark of Zentangle, Inc.

3. EMBOSSED FAN

Embossed Fan

  1. Cut a piece of embossed paper, available at most craft and hobby stores, to fit the fan shape, leaving a rounded area at the base. Fill some of the rounded area with peel-off outline stickers that coordinate with the embossed paper (Peel-offs from Elizabeth Craft Designs, www.elizabethcraftdesigns.com).

  2. Use Pentouch® in gold (Sakura of America, www.sakuraofamerica.com) to add bright metallic shine to selected areas of the embossed paper and to the area at the base of the fan.

  3. Attach fan handle using super hold double stick adhesive tape.

4. COLLAGE FAN

Collage Fan

  1. Arrange and glue assorted pieces of torn paper to the fan shape as shown or as you prefer. Glue several punched flowers in place, overlapping and layering them. (Cosmos Flower Punch: Martha Stewart for EK Success).

  2. Add color to the collage with Cray-Pas® Expressionist® Oil Pastels (Sakura of America, www.sakuraofamerica.com) in colors that coordinate with torn papers.

  3. Attach fan handle using super hold double stick adhesive tape.
