Materials:

  • Keys of your choice
  • Embellishments to put on the keys
  • E-6000 glue
  • Jump ring
  • Necklace chain of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Let's start with collecting the items. Collect some old keys, you probably have some in a junk drawer right now.  House keys can be surprisingly pretty, especially the older ones. Skeleton keys are naturally elegant and have a nice vintage look to them.  Even the occasional car key can be prettied up with some embellishments.

  2. Once you have your keys, you need some embellishments to add to them.  The most important, in my opinion, is rhinestone chain or imitation chain, sometimes called "bling on a roll".  You can order some bling on a roll or try to find an old rhinestone necklace that's missing a few stones and therefore can be cut up and re-purposed. This is going to be glued down the long part of the key. Other embellishments include old earrings with the backs removed; buttons; and items from the craft store meant to embellish scrapbooks and cards.

  3. To prepare your items for gluing, I recommend taking some rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and wiping down the surfaces of the key and the item you are going to glue to it. This removes any grease or other residue that might prevent a good attachment.

  4. Now start embellishing! My glue of choice is E-6000, which forms a really good bond but doesn't set up right away.  Sometimes I use a little hot glue simultaneously with the E-6000. The hot glue will hold the item in place while the E-6000 cures.

  5. Now that the keys are decorated, the fun part begins!  I just add a large jump ring to them and add them to different jewelry designs.
